UCLA OLB Akeem Ayers, a popular mock-draft choice for the Jets in the first round, headlined a group of six prospects that visited Wednesday with the team at their Florham Park facility, the Jets announced.
No surprises among the group; their arrivals were previously reported by various media outlets.
Aside from Ayers, the other likely first-rounder is Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi, who probably will be off the board by the Jets’ pick (No. 30 overall). The other visitors were Texas CB Chykie Brown, Buffalo CB Josh Thomas, Stanford DT Sione Fua and Louisville RB Bilal Powell — most of whom are regarded as mid- to late-round picks. Thomas is projected as a third rounder.
As noted in our secondary analysis, Brown has been on the radar throughout the pre-draft process. It appears that the Jets are in the cornerback market even though they tapped Kyle Wilson last year in the first round. Fua (6-0 1/2, 308) is undersized, but he’s a former California HS wrestling champion who plays with leverage and intensity.
Imagine a defensive line with Sione Fua and Sione Pouha — Sione in stereo. That would have to be an NFL first, right?
