Today, the Jets signed linebacker Aaron Maybin, who was cut by the Buffalo Bills after two unimpressive seasons.  How does Maybin, who’s on the road to becoming a draft bust, stack up against Jets draft bust Vernon Gholston?

AARON MAYBIN                                           VERNON GHOLSTON

Linebacker                                                         Defensive End

Drafted: 2009- 1st round, 11th pick            Drafted: 2008-1st round, 6th pick

Games: 26                                                           Games: 45

Tackles (Solo): 15                                             Tackles (Solo): 24

Tackles (Ast): 9                                                 Tackles (Ast): 18

Sacks: 0                                                               Sacks: 0

Int: 0                                                                     Int: 0

Forced Fumbles: 0                                            Forced Fumbles: 0

Passes Defended: 0                                          Passes Defended: 0

So, Maybin and Gholston, in five combined NFL seasons, have just as many sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles, and passes defended as you do.

Still, Rex Ryan says that Maybin has promise and some pass rush ability.  While he and Gholston have similar stats, one major difference between Maybin and Gholston is that Gholston has had three years in the league, while Maybin’s only had two.

When asked about Gholston prior to the start of last years season, Ryan said, “Generally by the third year, you got to see a guy really making strides, and I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.”  Gholston didn’t make those strides and he was cut.  With his third year in the NFL about to begin, and the league’s best defensive-minded head coach, this could be a last chance for Maybin to make it in the NFL.
