The Daily News has learned that the Jets will sign free agent safety Gerald Alexander to take Jim Leonhard’s spot on the 53-man roster. The Jets were in the market for another safety after Leonhard was placed on injured reserve due to a season-ending torn patellar tendon in his right knee suffered during Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

Jets bring in a big athletic safety to take Jim Leonhard’s role on the team. A very daunting task and he’ll have to really cram to nail down this playbook. Jets needed to act quickly because they are awfully thin at the safety position. He’ll be backing up Brodney Pool and Erci Smith. Also Safety Tracy Wilson is in the mix and could potentially see time as well. Either way the Jets are very weak at safety and a usual target by opposing teams offenses. The Jets have been notoriously bad at covering TE’s so I would expect teams to keep throwing at them  utilizing bigger more athletic TE’s.

Moving forward, the loss of Jimmy is going to be felt but safety is definitely an area that the Jets MUST address this offseason.
