five years to the day, and you’ll see that Manning was coming off an atrocious showing in a 30-7 loss to the Saints in New Orleans. He was 9-for-25 for 74 yards, one touchdown and an interception. The Giants fell to 7-8, Tom Coughlin ‘s job was on the line, and only a win over the Redskins in the final week of the season would put them in the playoffs and get Coughlin into the 2007 season as head coach.

The Giants got that win, but not before Coughlin made a bold move that ultimately benefited his franchise quarterback.

With major questions swirling about how the Giants were handling the play-calling for Manning, Coughlin replaced offensive coordinator John Hufnagel with quarterbacks coach Kevin Gilbride , who previously had called plays for Coughlin in Jacksonville.

A year later, Coughlin, Manning and the Giants won the Super Bowl .

Bob Glauber of Newsday wrote a great piece on Eli Manning and Mark Sanchez who are eerie similar in  their 3 year tenures with their ball clubs. Both quarterbacks are facing similar situations.

While most of the Jets fan base is flaming Brian Schottenheimer (rightfully so) I think the time for change is upon us. Bill Callahan with his appearance in the 2002 superbowl  with the Raiders was brought in to eventually take control. I always thought Callahan was brought in for this very reason. Although Rex did and or has/had confidence with Schotty I do believe this move to Callahan was in the cards intentionally as he is the guy to take over.

Hiring an offensive coordinator outside the organization is risky because normally the O.C wouldn’t have experience with the QB’s playing style. However Callahan does, he’s seen Sanchez first hand for his entire pro career so the move seems logical.
