6'3, 350, DT Sam Adams was released by Cincy today in a money saving move. While the cut only saved the team a projected $700,000, the effort is also to get more youthful on the D-Line. They have signed two DT's in the last three weeks (Kendrick Allen [GB], and Michael Myers [DEN]), and drafted another in this year's draft (Matt Toenia [Oregon]).
The three-time pro-bowler Adams, is 34, and COULD be our short-term answer to clogging the middle, and at $1.5 million a year, could assume the cap space currently reserved for that amount in a certain disgruntled left guard (???).
I'm sure he has a little left in the tank, at least enough for 1st and 2nd downs. If we could keep Drob as a third-down NT and in a strong rotation, we might have found that big-fatty we've been looking for, until next year's draft anyway (when the NT/DT talent is pretty stocked).

I'm pretty sure Drob did a better job than to be a situational substitute for the a 34 year old tackle who was cut to save under $1 million. Drob is going to the be the starting NT this year, PERIOD.

Bengals released DT Sam Adams.
Adams was seen as a cure-all for Cincy's run defense problems when he was signed last March, but he couldn't stay healthy. Another team will probably take a chance on him as a part-time player. The Bengals are very young on the interior line now.

First off, I'm a D-rob supporter, so why don't we share that wagon for a while. Secondly, Adams has the size to be the run-stopping NT we've been looking for. Drob is making the best out of an attypical situation, so lets not pretend that if we had Vince Wilfork and Drob on the roster that they wouldn't be used to their respective talents. Drob is a gap penetrator (a great one at that) and big-fatties like Sam Adams are better for handling muliple man responsibilities.
While my tone may have conveyed using Drob as the situational "3rd down" guy; I think it's best to say using a big-boy like Adams on obvious running downs is the better tactic. Adams on short-yardage downs would be a better fit than Drob, and Drob on obvious passing downs would be a better fit than Adams. I guess in retrospect the down doesn't matter as much as the situational defense we need to employ.

My point was that Mangini seems to like DRob a lot, and we already have big fat guys on our team (Pouha, Mosley) and size it always the answer. Sam Adams was probably cut for a reason, and to me the fact it only saved them $700,000 says he does'nt have much left. I would prefer Vince Wilfork, but even if we added Adams I think Drob is our best option at NT.

I'm sure Mangini could sell us on Joey Harrington if he was the best option at the position. Now Drob defies convention. Every other 3-4 team uses a bigger body to plug the middle. Drob didn't excell at the nose so much as he displayed improvement and dedication to making the awkward adustment. For that he should be applauded. He is the quintessential team player in that regard. But let's not ignore the fact that we had brought in Kenyotta Marshall, CJ Mosely, Darrelle Adams, Zarnell Fitch and Rashad Moore, (after having Drob and Pouha already on deck). I'm not saying Adams is the long term answer by no means. He was released by a 4-3 team that sought more youth (and probably pass-rush ability) on their D-Line. We would use Adams in a different role all-together, so the reason for his release is almost in-admissable. His production stats in the 4-3 were terrible (11 solo tackles, 2 sacks). In the 3-4 his presence would allow those behind him to get the tackles. It's a completely different responsibility set. We don't need him for long. Next year's draft is full of big-body NT's; just for one season, rotating to keep Drob fresh and unfrustrated. I think he could be the answer we've been seeking.

i would sign him to back-up D-rob. besides d-rob who do we have at NT? pohua? moore? ot much. i'd love to have him as a back-up and teach robertson about being a NT. who better to learn from? and FYI d-rob had a pretty good year all things considered
Get it done MT

I think a combo of DRob/Pouha are better than Adams, who didnt help the Cincinnati run defense much last year.
What makes you say that? Pouha has played 14 games in his career. That was in 2005 ( a 4-3 year). Adams has 25 lbs on Pouha and real NFL experience.

I agree with 115. Adams is getting up there in age and lacks reliability. Plus D-Rob improvement was leaps and bounds ahead of what we were thought to expect of him. Its hard to think we have done so much and Mangini is only into his second year of coaching.
Is it bad that the first thing I thought of when I read the title was beer?

I agree Adams didn't help Cincinatti's run D last year when that was what they brought him in for. I'd sign him to be a backup but wouldn't have him starting over DRob due to the progress he made down the stretch last year. He will want Kendall type money too seeing as this will probably be his last payday and may overprice himself.
