I think that for the most part we have a decent core going into 2009 but the draft is designed to address holes beyond just this season.
Our most obvious needs are Guard and Wide Receiver, with Quarterback in need of a potential upgrade. Running Back, Defensive Tackle and Corner Back are also needs for 2010 and beyond.
The positions in this draft that could have the most talent slipping into rounds 2 and 3 are WR and RB. Guys like Chris Wells and Moreno arent even considered on most mocks until at least the middle of round 1. That will push the rest of the draft worthy RBs down. The same is true for WR, where only Maclin and Crabtree are considered definitely 1st rounders.
I dont believe the Jets will draft a Guard in the 1st. They've spent too many 1st rounders on O-Lineman in recent years. Not to mention, this organization seems intent on drafting a Guard late and developing them.
I think that many of the teams in the top 10 will be eager to trade their picks. Teams situated in the middle of the round (like the Jets at 17) will be in a strong position to move up, but will they? They've shown a propensity to move up to get the player they want, but for all the times they have traded up, they have also traded down. Considering that RB and WR are two of our needs, it would actually make the most sense for the Jets to trade down and try to snag guys who slip into round 2.
Would the Lions be interested in trading up to 17 from 20? Could we swap our 1st (950 pts), 2nd (370 pts) and 4th for their 1st (850) and 2nd (580)? That would be equal valuation and it would allow us to move ahead of the Pats in the 2nd round and stay ahead of them in the 1st. I know we lose a pick in this scenario, but Im not seeing many logical trade partners...
Anyone have any suggestions?
