2005 Predict The Record Official thread.....

I don't know how anyone (Sports Illustrated or ESPN The Magazine, for instance) can pick an NFC team to win the Superbowl. The AFC now is on one of those NFC-type SB runs in the early 80's to mid 90's. The argument can be made that the top 5 or 6 teams in the AFC are better than any in the NFC. If you put Philly, Carolina or Atlanta in the AFC they at best would be fighting for a wildcard spot.
Also, I've seen people pick the Colts but I have some serious questions about the Colts beyond their defense. I don't know if they are a tough, grind-it-out team, battle-you-to the end type team that can win it. NE is, of course, that type of team. Carolina was that type of team. There's still questions about Philly (who only got over the hump because they played an overmatched Vike & Falcons). The Jets can be that type of team. The Colts have proven to be a front-running team that goes into a shell at the first sniff of adversity. Does anyone remember a team like that winning the SB?
By the way since 1980 (25 SBs) ony 4 teams have won the SB without a top 10 defense, they are: NE, 2001; Denver, 1998; Redskins, 1987; and Raiders, 1980.

Also, their division has been terrible since realignment. Houston and Jax were bad for a while and Tennesse was the only other team that had anything. THis year, the Texans have had a few seasons to get things together and have improved every year. The Titans aren't as bad as anyone (including myself) initally thoguht they would be; McNair is healthy, the receivers are still good, and they have two taletned backs. The defense is weak, but that doesn't mean they won't steal some games from better teams. Finally, the Jags are hot and I think they'll actually win the division.
I see the Colts being a big disappointment this season, and again, I think they could miss the playoffs.

The Rams (all offense) (no defense) should also be in that category.
2005 New York Jets 17-2 super bowl champs.

oops. i meant to put 12-4 and not 12-5.
if i'm not mistaken, there are 4 games on wildcard weekend. 2 games from the nfc and 2 from the afc. the 3rd and 6th seed and the 4th and 5th seed play eachother. this happens for both conferences. the only way to get a bye for wildcard weekend is to place 1st or second in your conference. i have us winning our division but placing 3rd in the afc which means we play in the wilcard game. last year's wildcard weekend it was-
afc-
4th-bolts
5th-jets
3rd-colts
6th-broncos
nfc-
4th-seahawks
5th-rams
3rd-packers
6th-vikings

Nope, the Rams had a top ten defense that year. People always think that the Rams have (and had) no defensive talent, but before Martz took over and started running the ship aground they were a heck of a team.

Your so right, a1. The 1999 Rams had the 7th ranked defense overall and were 4th ranked in points allowed. That was a top flight defense. Even the 2001 Rams which lost to NE had a top 10 defense: 3rd in total, 7th in points.
As a mentioned above, of the last 25 SB champions, only 4 did not have a top 10 defense: NE, 2001; Denver, 1998; Redskins, 1987; and Raiders, 1980.
