Wingert, a first-team all-league kicker, went 17-for-23 on field goal attempts, 38 of 39 on PATs and put 39 of his 64 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. He also became UNI's all-time leading scorer with 331 career points and finished with 60 career field goals.

Wingert said the Jets plan to bring at least two new kickers to mini-camp next week. Whoever shows best during those workouts will remain with the team through summer camp and at least into the preseason.

The Jets have an outstanding kicker in Mike Nugent, a two-year veteran from Ohio State who was the club's second-round draft pick in 2005. Nugent is 46-for-55 in career NFL field goal attempts, including a 24-for-27 performance last season when he made 18 straight.

"They were the earliest team that had talked to me, and they had been in contact basically throughout," said Wingert. "It's a good opportunity. They said they'll probably keep one guy in camp to use as a camp leg and maybe to try out as a kickoff specialist.

"I feel confident I can show them something."

Total side note, Brian Wingert the kicker from UNI was signed by the NY Jets. Might be a kickoff guy at best behind Nugent.

This is by no stretch of the imagination a message for Mike Nugent. The Jets bring in an extra kicker every year partially for competition, but also so Nugent doesn't have to make all the kicks in preseason games and they have an extra guy to throw out there and make some kicks. Basically this guy is just so Nugent doesn't get overworked before the season.

But yea, Not a lot of people like Nuge's kickoffs so that might be his way of getting on the roster, jusat that every roster spot counts and having a luxery kicker to get 5-10 yards deeper on kickoffs isnt usually what Management will do to sacrifice a special teams player/depth guy.

Throughout a football game he's probably makes about 3 to 5 kicks average (roughly). So according to you're logic, they are bringing in another kicker to take the load off?? That's just hilarious. Only reason is for competition in camp. Simple and plain

I agree with Besthands, but for different reasons. I thought teams brought in two PK's a lot. While the Jets had two permanent starters in Brien and Nugent they brought in kickers like D.J. Fitzpatrick and Xavier Beitia. The Broncos also had Ola Kimrin (the guy who made that 65 yd FG in pre-season but was cut after the game) in to kick while they had one of the best kickers in the game in Jason Elam on the roster. So no, I wouldn't really read too much into this as a message for Nugent or anything and this signing is definitely not so Nugent gets "overworked" ( hysterical.gif )

I like Mike Nugent. He's young and he made alot of kicks, a few in the clutch. His leg isn't as weak as you all make it out to be. Watch other games, I hardly see people kicking it into the endzone on kickoffs. In fact I see alot of guys that are big names like Viniteri, he doesn't make it in the endzone everytime either.

It's over blown.

Its not rediculous cus it happens every preseason!! im not talkin bout regular season. In camp they have another guy who kicks and in the second half of preseason games so he doesn't kick to much and either tire himself ouyt or injure himself.

Yes he might be a kicker but if he gets hurt what u gunna do then? your screwed, so they get some no name kicker to put in after he gets a kick or two so he doesnt get hurt so he misses games for the regular season

...................seriously guys.........

It is not competition for Nugent...

It is not so Nugent's leg doesn't get tired in preseason games...

It is simply because Nugent only has one leg to kick with...and in training camp every team needs several legs so that everyone can practice. Same way they always bring in more QB's for training camp arms.

yeah nugents kickoffs were too short, starting off at 35yardline was a weakness the jets had
