Wrapping up Jets' mini-camp
The Jets finished their three-day rookie mini-camp today, but it was closed to the media. So we didn't even get to see the myriad of stretching exercises and drills reporters were treated to on the first two days. Because we saw so little practice that resembled actual football, it wouldn't really be fair to judge who was impressive and who wasn't.
Initial Reactions can tell you that both first-round CB Darrelle Revis and seventh-round WR Chansi Stuckey saw action returning punts. Revis also will work some at safety, coach Eric Mangini said, but he quickly noted that would only be to give Revis more of an understanding of all the different defenses. He is and will be a cornerback.
Revis had a funny slip of the tongue Saturday. While praising special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff, Revis noted that he was a high-energy guy "for his age." That may result in a few extra laps for Revis courtesy of the 59-year-old Westhoff, if it hasn't already.
Some other tidbits from the weekend: The Jets' free-agent deal with Oklahoma QB/WR Paul Thompson obviously fell through very late, because they had only QB in camp on Saturday, Utah's Brett Ratliff. QB Marvin Burroughs of Villanova was brought in Sunday as a tryout.
One of the free-agent hopefuls, fullback Jesse Allen, is from Virginia Tech. He was off campus the day of the massacre last month. "I believe the school did everything in their power to do the right thing," he said when asked if he thought the Tech administration had botched the handling of the situation. "The first incident happened in a dorm room. I guess they felt they had isolated the incident. At that point, what do you do? Do you send all the kids from their classes back to the dorms? It's just a hard decision. I think the president and the faculty did the best they could."
Allen admitted that surviving that experience probably will change him at some point. "I imagine it will catch up with me," he said.

I wonder how long Revis will be the punt returner if he is set to become the #1 cornerback for the team in a year or two. Wouldn't want to risk injury on special teams.
