Rice mulls retirement after 20 seasons
NFL.com wire reports
DENVER (Sept. 4, 2005) -- Jerry Rice was in San Francisco, contemplating retirement.
Rice's agent, Jim Steiner, said the NFL's all-time leading receiver probably would make a decision before the Denver Broncos return to practice Sept. 5.
Rice signed with Denver this summer in hopes of finishing his career as a backup with the Broncos. He wanted to be the team's No. 3 receiver.
"That was a must for him," Steiner told the Associated Press.
Steiner said the team has made it clear that Rice probably would be only the fourth or fifth receiver if he decides to come back.
Hampered by a nagging foot injury, Rice caught only four passes for 24 yards in the preseason and had trouble getting open.
Denver kept six receivers on its final roster, including Rice, Darius Watts, Charlie Adams and Todd Devoe.
After Denver's final preseason game, Rice told the Denver Post: "Those guys deserve to be on the field. They worked real hard. the thing is, I'm going to hold my head high if it doesn't work out."

I think he'll retire if he doesn't have a respectable amount of rec./TDs by mid season
Oh this is his final season, that's not even a question. The question is, will he retire now or at the end of the season?

while i agree with you that we shouldnt get him because he isnt half the player he once was, you cant really use the reasoning that another team didnt want him so he isnt good enough for us. that isnt a good rule of thumb because other teams may be better off at certain positions or have different needs than other teams.

Jerry Rice is still capable of being a 5th WR. He had 14 yards per catch last year, I doubt he'll ask for a ridiculous ammount of money, and he's the best reciever of all time, why wouldn't you want his presence on the team? Yeah maybe he's a little banged up, but he wouldn't be used too much anyway.

First off he would be #4 in Dever, which is silly cause he's still better than all of them... Why would he chose not to retire to come here to be the 5th guy when he could be the 4th in Denver.
This thread is pointless no offense.

He WAS better than all of them. Right now I don't think he's better than Smith and Lelie. And I guess you're right this topic is pointless, considering they kept Rice.

Well, first off, he doesn't want to be a 4th reciever, he wants to be a 3rd at worst, so I have no idea how he'll accept our job. But if he wouldn't mind doing it, I'd sign him, he is a favorite of mine, I lke him as much as I like Chad, Vilma, Martin, Chrebet, etc.
