The New York Jets announced today the signing of defensive end Kenyon Coleman to a contract. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

“Kenyon Coleman is a physical defensive lineman and we like his size and strength up front,” Tannenbaum said. “He has experience playing the 3-4 defense and we’re looking forward to having him be a part of our organization.”

Coleman, going into his sixth season in the NFL, played in all 16 games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2006, registering four sacks and batting down two passes while recording 31 tackles.

"Kenyon Coleman is a smart, tough and dedicated football player who has proven to be a valuable contributor to a similar defensive system,” said Head Coach Eric Mangini. “His experience and his leadership will add to the depth of our team. Kenyon will have an opportunity to compete for a starting position and contribute to the team, and I look forward to him being a part of the New York Jets."

Coleman, originally a fifth-round draft selection (147th overall) of the Oakland Raiders in the 2002 draft out of UCLA, played four seasons for the Cowboys after spending his rookie season with the Raiders.

“I’m excited to be a part of the New York Jets organization,” Coleman said. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to play for Coach Mangini and help the team in any way I can.”

ANALYSIS
Positives: Well-built with thick legs and long arms … Flashes explosion off the ball and has above-average anchor and leverage ability to hold firmly at the point of attack … Shows power in his moves down the line … Has the instincts to react quickly and is very aware of play action and fakes … Extends his arms well to keep blockers off him and has the lateral agility to excel coming from the backside … Shows good breakdown and body control in his tackling form, using his long arms to capture ball carriers in space … Has very good knee bend and balance to keep his feet on the move … Has a sudden short burst to penetrate and also shows the sustained speed to be effective in long pursuit … Natural pass rusher who comes off the ball with good twitch, body lean and leverage … Big factor when operating in plays away from him, so he can redirect and give backside chase … Comes off the line at the proper pad level … Can burst around the corner with speed, looping through the gaps with above-average quickness.
Negatives: Needs to do a better job with his hands, as he sometimes struggles to disengage once blockers lock on … Has to square his base better, as he will turn his shoulders and get sealed off at the point of attack … Shows a good anchor, but can still be driven off the ball when blockers run directly at him … Needs to add more strength and refine his technique to be consistent vs. the run.

10. David Bowens | OLB | MIA | Free Agent

QUOTE ( @ Mar 27 2007, 07:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Continuing their shopping spree on defense, the Jets agreed to terms yesterday with former Dolphins defensive end David Bowens, according to an NFL source. Unlike the previous two signings, Andre Wadsworth and Michael Haynes, Bowens isn't a bargain-basement retread.

Bowens will sign a three-year, $6.1 million contract, which includes escalators that could bring the total to $8 million. Though he's too small (6-3, 265) to be an every-down lineman in the Jets' 3-4 scheme, Bowens will be a situational pass rusher and possibly an outside linebacker.

As a part-time player for the Dolphins, Bowens recorded 18 sacks over the last three seasons, although his total dipped to five last year. Bowens, who turns 30 in July, picked the Jets over the Panthers, Patriots and Dolphins. The latter two teams only offered one-year contracts.

QUOTE
The New York Jets added another free-agent defensive end, agreeing to terms with former Dolphin David Bowens.

According to several reports, Bowens will sign a three-year, $6 million contract that could be worth as much as $8 million.

The Jets also have signed defensive ends Kenyon Coleman, Michael Haynes and Andre Wadsworth this offseason.

Bowens, 6-foot 3, 265 pounds, reportedly picked the Jets over the Panthers, Dolphins and Patriots.

Although a defensive end for his entire career, Bowens, 29, will probably play mostly at outside linebacker, in a kind of hybrid-type position or in a situational role, in New York's 3-4 alignment.

Bowens' agent, Harold Lewis told The Journal News that the Jets were relentless in the pursuit of his client. He said a manager in the Jets' operations, Ari Nissim, called him constantly after Bowens visited the team in early March.

"He was relentless," Lewis told The Journal News. "He was calling every single day after David visited."

The Jets posted 35 sacks in 2006, in coach Eric Mangini's first season, but want to create more pressure this season.

Bowens has just 26 career sacks, but 18 have come in the past three seasons, and he has always possessed the ability to pressure the pocket.

The former Western Illinois standout entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft choice of the Denver Broncos in 1999. He was traded to Green Bay in 2000, then Miami claimed him on waivers in 2001.

Beyond his 26 sacks, Bowens has 168 tackles, 18 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 104 games.
