The Australians are being told that taking more protein than you need may make you gain the wrong kind of weight. Not muscular weight, but fat. This advice coming from Australian Institute of Sport.
This investigation was brought on from some deceptive advertising. Imagine that, using hype to sell a product.
For the most part I think they are right in their assumption. In determining your protein needs, you have to use commonsense. If your body demands the extra protein fuel such as a bodybuilder, strength trainer or endurance athlete that trains hard, then you need it. But if you are a more recreational type of lifter then maybe you should be cutting back on the protein consumption. Maybe you should replace those protein calories with carbohydrates such as vegetables and fruits.
Personally if I am going through a period that I am cutting back on my training, I will cut back on my protein consumption.
If you need help in determining your protein needs, find a qualified sports nutritionist or a knowledgeable personal trainer. The right person can help you make the right decision on not only protein but also carbohydrates and fats. This in return can save you a lot of wasted time trying to burn off the fat when maybe you just need to adjust your training diet.
