Pitching-starved Yanks deal for Leiter

The Yankees and Marlins have an agreement in principle on a deal that will make Al Leiter a Yankee again, Newsday has learned.

The Yankees have agreed to send about $250,000 to Florida for Leiter, 39, the veteran lefthander who was recently designated for assignment by the Marlins. The Yankees will send no players to Florida, which will pay the remainder of Leiter's annual $8-million salary, minus the pro-rated portion, about $150,000, which will be paid by the Yankees.

Leiter will be thrown right into action by the Yankees. He is expected to start Sunday in Boston for them.

The Yankees' pitching situation grew desperate after the shoulder injury incurred by rookie Chien-Ming Wang and a 17-1 defeat to archrival Boston on Friday night in which Tim Redding and Darrell May were both roughed up. While Leiter was just 3-7 with a 6.64 ERA for Florida, he is a veteran of the New York baseball scene, having starred for the Mets years after coming up with the Yankees.

Leiter expressed his interest in continuing his career in an email to Newsday on Friday.

"I have a real difficult time thinking that this is it for me," he said. "I still have a burning desire to end on a much better note. Since the release, the flame has turned up considerably. A few teams are interested and some of the teams are very intriguing."

HE was great agiants the soxs. We just barely won the game last night. We took 3 out of 4 which is great and we are only .5 games behind the soxs.

What a pickup, I don't see that being just a lucky game, this guy still has it in him, and he'll make a great fill in or even roto spot, but well have to see with Brown and Pavano both comeing back within the next week, well have to see
