Just wanted everyone's opinion.....since everyone is talking about barton getting cut or hobson moving inside and so on.....i want to think there is a chance that schlegel can be something after working with mangini for 2-3 years. he is big, 6-1 251lbs., and around draft time mangini said the reason he drafted him at the time was that on a team w carpenter and hawk schlegel was still always at the bottom of the pile, always around the ball and it stood out on tape. I am not saying he is a star today, but NONE of us would have said cotchery would be what he is today and it shows what a killer work ethic in the offseason can do. All I am saying is that if mangini saw him as having a nose for the ball like he said he did right after the draft he may be a good young compliment to vilma in ILB core....opinions???..

Weren't we all pretty high on Cotchery? Cotchery set records at NC State...breaking Tory Holt's old ones...Schlegel did nothing of the sort. Schlegel will find his way on the field on running downs and goal line situations similiar to Kassell. Let's just hope Schlegel is smart enough not to fall for the play fake on an incredibely obvious goal line pass play...

Even though Vilma doesnt fit the system i dont think Schlegal can do what Vilma can talent wise. Although Mangini does award good work ethics. During training camp mangini will watch him and see if he improves if he does he'll get more playing time i doubt he'll start he'll probably fill the role that Kassel and Chatam did this season.

i think Schlegel might have been one of the few mistakes Mangini has made . it looks like he's becoming a project and at the price of a third round pick - that's a mistake .

a third round pick should be contributing right away and he was inactive most of the time . i think they outsmarted themselves here .

as far as this blather about trading Vilma : Vilma is a good football player and he's playing in a system now that is not a star system , so he's not going to have the stats or achieve the stardom that he showed before the 3-4 . also , don't compare the situation with Ray Lewis and the Ravens . Lewis had to have the recognition and he complained . Vilma is not that way and he's too good a player to trade .

trade Vilma and plug in Schlegel ? that is not going to happen .

me too i was yelling for the move all year. plus we'll have pohua, tui, moore, mosley, and possible free agents and draft picks. one fo those things has to amount to a decent NT. d-rob can be the DEwith ellis and we'd have some real beef on the line. with tui, drob, and ellis our line would average over 300lbs a piece

D-ROB actually was probably the best D-lineman on the team and playing out of position no less .

the more you look at it the more you realize the JETS need to fortify the trenches , on both sides of the ball .

we'll see what Mangini comes up with . i'm guessing a better Right Tackle on O and an upgrade in size and quality with 2 guys to ROTATE with ELLIS anf ROBERTSON on D .

Or at least i hope they can accomplish that .

You can't. Especially when you know nothing about him. It's not like he started every game and sucked. He barely played. He spent most of the season on the practice squad. It may have been a bit of a reach to take him in the 3rd, but it's definitely too early to call him a bust. Mangini must have seen something in him to take him that early, and hopefully he is grooming him. I expect him to make more of an impact next year.

the guy could be the next teddy bruschi or mike vrabel or maybe the next brad kassell.......point is we'll never no because he never plays and how is it the vilma wasnt a success when he had more tackles than teddy bruschi and pro bowler jermiah trotter all while learning a new sytem and getting absolutely sucked in by the opponents offensive line because we dont have a true NT
