(May 6, 2007) — The Answer Man makes a spring visit:
Your hatred of the New York Jets is ridiculous. How can you think the Bills will be better than the Jets this season after the Jets were 10-6 and the Bills were 7-9 last year? I don't "hate" the Jets. I just don't think they're an above average NFL team and are consistently overrated by most of their fans. The Bills are at the same level but I don't think as high a percentage of their fans overrate them. They both look like 8-8 teams — at best — to me this season.I can't see the logic in the Jets being 40-to-1 to win Super Bowl XLII and the Bills being 90-1. I don't think either team is going to win this season's championship or even make the playoffs.
Why do I believe the 2007 Bills will be at least as good as the Jets?
Head-to-head is a good place to start. The teams split last season. The Jets won 28-20 in Buffalo Sept. 24 despite being outgained 475-256. The Bills won 31-13 at the Meadowlands Dec. 10 and outgained the Jets 318-275.One reason the Jets had a better record last season is that they played a significantly softer schedule outside of the AFC East. Buffalo's non-division opponents were a combined 91-69 last season and the Jets' non-division opponents were 70-90.I prefer Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman over a surgically repaired Chad Pennington. I prefer Buffalo's wide receivers. I believe Buffalo's offensive line will be much-improved this season. I think Bills rookie running back Marshawn Lynch can be as productive as Jets import Thomas Jones this season. I think Buffalo has a better pass rush (outsacked the Jets 40-35 last season) and a promising secondary. I prefer Buffalo's special teams. I even like Buffalo's uniforms better.
I don't "hate" the Miami Dolphins, either, but I think the Bills and the Jets both are better teams with brighter futures.
