Name: Adam Carriker
College: Nebraska Number: 90
Height: 6-6 Weight: 286

Adam Carriker DE 6'6 295 Nebraska
By: Robert Davis
Carriker starter to come into his own during his sophomore season with the Huskers, after posting 36 tackles, seven for loss, and three sacks despite battling an ankle injury. He blew up as a junior, becoming one of the most feared ends in the country, finishing with 43 tackles, 17 for loss, and 9.5 sacks. Carriker didnít disappoint as a senior, as he again was an all around force. He had 34 tackles, 13.5 for loss, and six sacks on the year, to go along with an interception.

Adam Carriker is an interesting blend of talent. He has excellent size and strength, but has the athleticism to go along with it. He is already bigger than a lot of NFL defensive ends, and has the strength to push tackles out of his way. He has the ability to bull rush lineman, and can also hold his ground at the point of attack. Carriker has been a productive pass rusher in college, and knows how to get to the quarterback. He also has good straightline speed for a player his size.

While he is a good athlete for a player his size, he is not the freak many people make him out to be. He probably lacks the explosive quality you look for in top tier defensive ends. He has bulked up to 295lbs this year, but he doesnít look to have the same agility he had prior.

Adam Carriker is a player that shows nice all around skills, and should be a complete defensive end at the next level. He may be best suited as a 3-4 end because of his size and power, and lack of explosive pass rush ability off the edge. Carriker reportedly is a great workout player, and may be a player who impresses a lot of people in the post season. If he lands in the Top 50, he has probably gone too high, but he should be a Day One pick.

Nfldraftcountdown....

Strengths:
Has outstanding size and a big frame...Has tremendous strength and is extremely powerful...Holds his ground and is exceptional against the run...Has a motor that never stops...Solid tackler...Instinctive and pursues well...Is technically sound and uses his hands well...Is versatile and could play a number of different roles and positions...Very productive...Tough guy and a hard worker with great intangibles.

Weaknesses:
Is not overly athletic and lacks great timed speed...A DE / DT 'tweener...He might be too tall and has trouble protecting his lower body...Is not a great natural pass rusher...Is not explosive and doesn't have a burst to close...Has battled through a series of minor injuries during his career...May not be a good fit for every team.

Notes:
Might be able to move inside to tackle but his best fit at the pro level will probably come as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme...He isn't the type of flashy pass rusher we are accustomed to seeing from the position but that isn't everything...With so many teams now moving to the 34 defense there will probably be a high demand for this guy so don't be surprised if the "Blackshirt" goes higher than most expect.

i am a fan of this guy, but would rather wait to get him with our early 2nd round pick rather then our first round pick

If we get him with our 2nd round pick, and Okoye with our 1st, we would have a great draft then to revamp our defensive line.

carriker is a perfect 3-4 DE. these are the 5 other 3-4 teams in the NFL.

san diego- olshansky-williams-castillo
new england- seymour-wilfork-warren
dallas- canty-ferguson-spears
pittsburg- keisel-hampton-smith
cleveland- mckinley-washington-frasier

the chargers, patriots, and cowboys are totally set with their front 3. however, the browns and steelers might want to replace one of their DEs this year. the browns will not spend a #3 overall on carriker, they might trade down and grab branch but we will have to worry about them going defense with their second rounder if they grab peterson or a QB with their 1st rounder. pittsburg could reach on carriker at #15 though it will still be a solid pick, but in that case it will be easy for us to figure something out since that decision will have been made for us. we should definitely grab carriker in the 1st round if he is available bc he is the best 3-4 DE available besides branch who should go top 10. then we can go OLB/RB in the second round. a sick draft would be carriker/woodley/OL, carriker/bush/spencer, or carriker/moses/OL

This guy does sound like the perfect fit for the Jets. The only problem is that if they pick him, it means they're committed to keeping Dewayne at NT, which is not a very good fit. This draft is gonna tell us a lot about the direction that the team wants to go in. As I said, if they pick an end early, I expect Dewayne to stay at NT. If they don't, it could mean that they want to move Dewayne to end and find another NT. Of course, it's possible that they will use a bunch of different sets with Dewayne rotating from NT to DE. I guess they could pick Carriker and groom him to be Shaun Ellis's replacement in a couple years. That would really add depth to the line and allow Dewayne to play end and tackle for the time being. I could see them doing that.

500th post, baby!

I doubt we get both of them but if we do that would be like getting Ferguson and Mangold this year except it would solidify the DLine for years to come. However saying that I think our first two picks won't be focused solely on the DLine and RB, G and OLB will certainly be looked at.

i would hope they dont draft him because Dewayne should be our DE, our first pick should be used on an OLB and our second round picks either a NT that rises come draft time, or an Offensive LineMan, I myself like think we should go TE

Why? They have Baker, who has come through time and time again when called upon, and Ryan, who proved that he is a solid blocker who can also catch the ball. I'm not saying they couldn't use a guy like Greg Olsen, who I went to high school with and will be an absolute beast, but I don't know about the second round. The team has too many needs to take a TE in the second round imo.

We don't need a TE. Baker is good but they never get him the ball. DLine or BAP.

iagree.gif Plus we drafted a TE in the later rounds last year in Pociask and still have Ryan on the roster. If Baker was used more it would make the offense more successful as it would spread the defense out more as they would have another player to account for. Against NE he did great.

Strengths: Possesses outstanding size and good quickness for his size. Is tall, well-built and powerful. Shows adequate initial quickness and good agility for such a bigger DE prospect. He plays with adequate leverage and shows the base to take on blocks versus the run. He takes solid angles in pursuit and has become a reliable wrap-up tackler in space. Also is a powerful hitter. Shows good instincts as a pass rusher. Displays a wide array of power moves and is relentless in pursuit. Not a speed-rusher type off the edge, but he is productive because of his quickness, power, versatility and motor.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal top-end speed. Does not show the speed or closing burst to consistently turn the corner as an edge rusher in the NFL. Is a power-end type that will only fit well in certain schemes. He must continue to improve his hand-usage in order to consistently disengage quicker.

Overall: Carriker was redshirter in 2002. He played in nine games in 2003, missed three games with an ankle injury, and finished the year with three total tackles, one tackle for loss, and one sack. In 2004, he appeared in 10 games (eight starts), missed more time with an ankle injury, and recorded 36 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, and three sacks for the season. Carriker then started all 12 games in 2005 at "base" defensive end, made 43 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, and forced one fumble earning First Team All-Big 12 recognition from the Associated Press.
With an impressive combination of size and agility, Carriker has always been supremely talented but finally showed signs of reaching his full potential as a junior. If he can take his game to the next level as a senior, Carriker could come off the 2007 draft board as early as the second round.

why not though? Right now its are biggest need. But we will have a much clearer picture on what we need in April, once the FAs are signed. We wont have as many needs then as we do now.

Baker doesnt have nearly the same athletic ability that these guys have and he is constantly injured. I like Baker but i think he would be better as the no.2 TE. As for Ryan he is strictly a blocker and the guy we drafted last year i dont even know if he's on the team anymore. TE's are very valuable to QB's in that short to intermediate area and thats were chad lives and dies plus we dont have anyone to make tough grabs over the middle. If one of these guys is there in the 2nd rd we would be wise to grab one. Not taking Miller would be like Calvin Johnson falling to us and us saying no thanks we already have Laverneus Coles........that would be insane. These guys are on a totally different level than baker is and im sure penny would go to him if he was good enough but my guess is that he isnt.
