Assault Charge Filed Against Braylon Edwards

CLEVELAND -- An assault charge has ben filed against former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

The Cleveland city prosecutor on Monday charged Edwards with misdemeanor assault in connection with a fight outside a Cleveland bar.

Edwards was allegedly involved in an altercation at the View nightclub on Prospect three weeks ago. A friend of LeBron James said Edward punched him in the face.

Edwards was traded to the New York Jets a few days later.

The charges carries up to a $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail, although community service and probation would be more likely if Edwards is convicted.

Edwards will be arraigned on Nov. 17.

Edwards was traded to the New York Jets days after he was accused of punching entertainment promoter Edward Givens about 2:30 a.m. outside the View Ultralounge & Nightclub on Prospect Avenue.

Givens, a party promoter and friend of Cavs superstar LeBron James, said Edwards is jealous of James' success and that led to the attack.

Following the incident, James called the incident "childish."

Edwards faces a sentence of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, if convicted.

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards was charged with misdemeanor assault today in connection with an incident outside a Cleveland nightclub, the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting.

The charges stem from an accusation that Edwards punched a friend of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James. The incident took place shortly before Edwards was traded to the Jets from the Cleveland Browns.

The Plain Dealer reports that Edwards faces a sentence of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if he's convicted of misdemeanor convicted.

Edwards had 10 catches for 139 yards in four games with the Browns. He has nine catches for 118 yards in three games with the Jets.

I seriously doubt Edwards will see any jail time whatsoever for this. Suspensions from the league he may get, nothing big though.

I'd say this was a matter of time. This actually kind of plays in our favor since we have to resign him. His value will drop. better to get a situation like this over with now then later.

Any suspension would likely come next year, which is what bothers me. Regardless, everybody knew about possible charges before Braylon came here, so no surprise. Hopefully anything he gets is light.
