A new sports nutrition supplement and bodybuilding training. Is there a link?
In a press release, Accelerade announced it was "Named Official Sports Drink for USA Wrestling". Also in the release they claim their product has a "4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein, offers significant benefits to wrestlers including greater endurance, enhanced rehydration, reduced muscle damage and faster recovery."
Bodybuilding training uses a hypertrophy type of muscle growth. To the beginning bodybuilder, what this means is the main fuel used by the body for bodybuilding is glycogen. It is stored in the liver and muscle tissue and converts to glucose. That is why you see weight lifters in their hypertrophy cycle sipping on some kind of sport carbohydrate drink in between sets. It keeps their muscle cells full of fuel. Also it starts the recovery process sooner. The concept of adding protein to a carbohydrate drink is not new. Another big name sports drink company has stated that this has no benefit to the athlete in general. When they did their studies on the protein/carbohydrate drink, it was reported the recovery time was not shortening between workouts. Also biopsies showed the muscle tissue had the same amount of glycogen stores regardless using the drink or not.
I tried mixing a small amount of whey protein powder with carbohydrate concentrate. I drank this mix while training during my hypertrophy cycle. It seems that I had more energy to do things after the workout using the protein/carbohydrate mix.
