check out this article.................the colts have just enough money this off-season to franchise dwight freeney so that he he wont hit free agency (colts cap about 10 mill......franchise tag on DE 9.4 mill) but not enough money to give him the long term contract he wants which is the highest paid Defensive player in the league b/c peyton is aleady the highest paid player in the league and they have a bunch of contracts they need to rework which would spell disaster for their future.............if they franchise him they wont be able to resign back pro-bowl lb cato june or safety mike doss and other important FA......this also means indy wont be able to improve its team at all during the free agency period.....and if they do franchise him he's guranteed to leave after 2 years which is max number of years you can franchise a player under the new agreement and the franchise tag in general is a slap in the face of player who touts himself best defensive player in the league.........................Long Story short they're screwed and either way it helps the Jets...........not to mention that freeney said he would be willing to switch to a 3-4 olb for one of the teams that said they would aggressively pursue him this offseason which are the 49ers and the other is the Buccaneers...........im intrigued by the possibility we have of signing him if he is let go because he is an excellent pass rusher and performs best in playoffs at a positon we lack a true pass rusher.....plus we have excellent salary cap and he's a player that could put us over the top....................Still rather draft woodley though
