i think that prioritizes the needs on O and would allow everyone to succeed more .

but , at some point they have to add to the TE position for depth and competition . Baker should do better .

Like you say the oline should be solidified in FA......when you have a player who can be a great you have to take that player especially b/c we will only use a 2nd rounder to get him.........if we get him he'd make our passing attack that much more dangerous,,,,,O bye the way did anyone see Dallas Clark had today...............but who needs great TE's right............you guys almost had me on that boat but i've seen what the difference between good and great......but who needs great players right?

You mean what did Peyton Manning do? Or Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne? Or Addai and Rhodes? Or how about the Indy offensive line...

Yeah if Chris Baker had that supporting cast something tells me he'd be just as good if not better than Dallas Clark...

They have almost identical height and weight...and Clark's best year was 488 yards. Baker's best if 300. Clark has scored 5 TD's in one season...Baker has scored 4.

Now if you put Dallas Clark on the Jets...something tells me his numbers would drop significantly. Clark rarely ever blocks in Indy, and is always out running routes. To say Clark has a slight QB advantage would be a crime. You just can't compare them...except their measurables...which Baker probably wins out in anyway...

the lowest recieving yards among all those guys is 626 and he played 15 games
Baker started all 16 games and had 300 recieving yards.
crumpler had the least receptions out of all those guys and 56
baker had 31 receptions
Out of all those guys gonzalez had the least TD's at 5 in 15 games
Baker had 4 TD's in 16 games

Sorry to chime in so late here, but you really are making an argument against your point here. Yes the statistics you listed are all correct..but the whole point here is that Baker is underutilized. If you took any of your "elite" players above and only threw them 40 balls..trust me, they would have the same numbers as Baker. In fact maybe even worse.

Baker had 4 TD grabs in only 31 receptions. Im sure thats one of the best ratios amongst all the TEs above. Not to mention its actually 5 TDs. (cleveland)

Baker has shown that he can play at a higher level...evidenced by the fact that he has caught for over 100 yards in a game. He has shown that he can find open space in the field. Its just a matter of under utilization plain and simple. Its possible though that Schotts eyes opened slightly and the level of his play calling may have taken a step up in the Pats game when he realized Baker was on the field. Maybe this will carry over into next year...maybe.

Back to the original point of the topic though...if for some reason one of these guys takes a tremendous slide down the draft, I would certainly consider taking them. I am a firm believer that the 3rd round and beyond is reserved for taking the best athlete available.

what does height and weight have to do with anything? Almost every TE have the same height and weight.........do you actually now how many times Baker blocks or are just pulling this out of somewhere? And have you watched every colts game to say the same about clark ........i can understand people who defend chad but Really please hop off Chris Baker's Meat. The guy is nothing more than a no.2 TE. He has done absolutely nothing in his career to suggest he can be an elite TE or even hang with somebody like dallas clark......And to say Peyton is the better overall QB than Chad but he did look like CHAD against the pats..he wasnt great all playoffs all he did was manage games..clark mad amazing catches...dallas clark was proving he could play even when he was a rookie....and you even want to suggest that chris baker can be as good as him in his 6th year?... ...please take that crap some where else

It depends what other players were available on the board such as RBs, OLBs, DEs and NTs because with the depth in this draft class there is surely going to be someone available in the 2nd that will fill one of these needs and not be considered a reach. To be honest I'd prioritise a 3rd WR above TE if McCareins likely shown the door.
Baker doesn't deserve to be a #2 TE and he showed this year that if utilized more, he can be an above average starter.

I have watched A LOT of colts games. I have seen nothing to make me think that Dallas Clark is any better than Chris Baker. Dallas Clark has been starting for almost 4 full years for the best offense in the NFL over that span. He plays in an offense where you basically need to have legs to succeed. He spends little of his time blocking and runs far more routes than Chris Baker. Chris Baker, meanwhile, has been starting for two years, during which he has spent much of his time blocking. If Chris Baker played on the colts, he would be at least as successful as Dallas Clark.
