How many people on this site have actually been to France and/or met numerous French people?

I was referring to Frances actions during WW1, a historical fact on its own that should be enough for people to have a general dislike for a nation.

BUT since you asked, let me answer. YES I have met French people and YES I do dislike them very much.

I was on a trip in Dominican Republic and while there I went rafting. I had the unfortunate displeasure of going with a group of about 30 French and 6 Americans including myself. They were loud, drunk and rude. The Dominican tour guide realized he had a big tip opportunity to he catered very much to their demands. Letting them drink further on the bus ride back and giving them the microphone. That's where things got really ugly!!! They proceeded to spend the next 30 minutes singing what sounded like the French national anthem as LOUD as they could. I simply could not take it anymore and I pleaded with the host the take back the microphone but he didn't, so that's when things got ugly. I got up from the back of the bus, ripped the microphone out of one of their hands and smashed it to the floor and got into a shove match with the frenh people immediately around me. They saw it in my eyes that I was ready to kill one of them. I didn't care about the consequences even though it was 1 vs 30. So YES, while I don't like to stereotype I do not like French people. This partiular group was the loudest, most foul and obnoxious group I have ever had the displeasure to be around. Couple that with their extreme nationalistic pride and an open willingness to throw it in your face and you can see why I would get upset. By the way after I asked niely for them to stop with the anthem, one lady took the mic faced me and sang it literally at the top of her lungs. Assholes.

You've never met a group of 30 or so obnoxious Americans?

And what is wrong with being proud of your nation? Are you not proud of your country, heritage, and people?

This is exactly the problem with the way people view New Yorkers...as loud, obnoxious, inpolite people...when in fact we are not bad people at all...we may not have southern hospitality but most New Yorkers would give you the shirt off their back even if they don't say hello to you on the street.

The point is...you met one group of French people who were all likely similar types of people seeing as they were all hanging out together. Most Americans go to France with the pre-concieved notion that all French people are rude and they all hate Americans...so when you couple that with French people's apparent "inpolitness" you get blind hatred.

I have been to France several times and I have had good experiences with the people and I have had plenty of bad experiences...same as in any country...but if you go to France with respect for the people and the culture and you attempt to speak their language you'll find they are actually nice people. The language is what kills me...if some German guy came up to and started speaking German to you fulling expecting you will understand and it happened everywhere you went in your own city...don't you think you might get a little annoyed? Most French people are fully willing to speak English to you as long as you try to speak their language in their country.

Sorry...I'm ranting...but I just hate blinding hating someone or something because someone else told you to. Not that I am necessarily accusing you in particular of it...but it happens all the time...and I get really annoyed by it.

It seems the World Wars created a large number of stereotypes that some people stupidly still believe in today. There is a large amount of anti-French feelings in the US, Britain and Germany and a lot of people in Britain still hate the Germans even if they were born two decades ago and were hardly affected by the war.
The truth is you will find a load of obnoxious, arrogant people in every country, the worst offenders IMO are my fellow Brits, a lot of who believe they rule the world and everyone else are inferior to them.

Happy belated Independence Day by the way!

I'm too hung over to follow the flow of the conversation. All I know is British people eat funky shit and have rotten teeth. With that said, I love "Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrells", "Snatch" and the fact that you guys are the most racist people ever. It's bloody funny.

If nothing else, I hope you learned that the French are pieces of shit from the "Da Vinci Codes".

That was obviously a typo, I was sitting on the crapper and typing my reply on my cell phone.

Forgive and forget, lol. While we're on the topic of WWII I guess you forgive and forget Hitler for his actions right? I mean it was over 50 years ago, and by most accounts he was killed or killed himself before the close of the war. Statements like that make me laugh.

I for one enjoy hating people. It makes my life easier to be able to distinguish between those I hate and those I havent yet found a reason to hate.

Also in reply to another post, are we defending the French for being rude because foreigners are forced to try and communicate via their native tongue? Europe is a giant melting pot. Why arent other nationals considered rude?

Also the example of speaking German is a little out of touch. How about we use Spanish as an example. Look at how many people in this country speak only Spanish. I personally dont deal with them in my line of work, but my father whos a doctor has to deal with plenty of people who dont speak english. You dont see him being rude about it. He just tries his best to communicate or find someone else who can help. I was riding today on the train and there was a coca cola advertisement completely in Spanish. I didnt get rude. It didnt transform me into an asshole. I simply ignored it because it clearly isnt targeting me.

I especially loved the part where you said "whats wrong with having nationalistic pride?" Answer is nothing. Theres nothing wrong with it as long as its done in good taste. You dont see me going to France and screaming in a microphone the star spangled banner. And if I were to get drunk and start stumbling around screaming something like that, I would fully expect to get my ass beat. I understand that in my situation they werent doing it in the US, they were doing it in the DR, but in my opinion thats even worse. I happen to think smaller nations like the DR have much more nationalistic pride than the US, and carrying about the way they were, they were just asking to get into trouble. Maybe I did them a favor by shutting them up?

Listen asshole, I dont need you calling me a prick. I signed up for white water rafting, not a booze cruise. And after a long day I just want to take it easy on the even longer bus ride back to my hotel. Ive got no problem with people carrying on and having fun, but why the f*** do they need to do it on the microphone??? You want to sing, then sing...but just because they had a big group doesnt mean its their bus. There was at least 6 people on that bus that were not part of their group, and each and every one of them thought the situation was getting completely out of hand. Not to mention before I ever reacted physically I asked politely that the tour guide please take back the mic. I also consider it hostile behavior for someone to get in your face and scream something even louder after you asked them politely to keep it down. So like I said, they tested me and I was ready to take on the whole bus, and I wasnt alone. The other Americans on the bus were more than ready to lend me a hand. I dont think 6 people would take on 30 people in a fight unless it was warranted.

Hitler is one man...a country is...well...a few more people. You said one mistake in a nation's history is reason enough to dislike them. Excuse me? The people who you are talking about are either dead or near it...it is a whole new generation of France...how can you even say something so ignorant. Just the whole logic behind what you said escapes me...as if you or your country has never done something wrong...slavery anyone?

I for one enjoy hating people. It makes my life easier to be able to distinguish between those I hate and those I havent yet found a reason to hate.

You should research the law of attraction...postive brings positive...

Also in reply to another post, are we defending the French for being rude because foreigners are forced to try and communicate via their native tongue? Europe is a giant melting pot. Why arent other nationals considered rude?

I'm not sure I would really call Europe a melting pot...America is a melting pot...Europe is made up of seperate nations with distinct cultural and historical backgrounds. Besides that...what are you saying here...I aplogize I am not trying to be an ass I honestly do not understand what you are saying?

Also the example of speaking German is a little out of touch. How about we use Spanish as an example. Look at how many people in this country speak only Spanish. I personally dont deal with them in my line of work, but my father whos a doctor has to deal with plenty of people who dont speak english. You dont see him being rude about it. He just tries his best to communicate or find someone else who can help. I was riding today on the train and there was a coca cola advertisement completely in Spanish. I didnt get rude. It didnt transform me into an asshole. I simply ignored it because it clearly isnt targeting me.

That example is different that millions of tourists a year coming to your country and speaking their language to you fully expecting you to speak their language back to you. And we really can't pretend there aren't plenty of Americans who get really, really pissed off when someone speaks Spanish to them...right or wrong it most definitely happens.

What about French pride have you seen that is obnoxious and done without taste? If you are referring to the group on your tour I will say again...that is one group of people...you could very easily find that same group from Puerto Rico, Ireland, or China. I agree that that situation you were in sounds obnoxious and I likely would have been annoyed aswell...but they don't speak for all of France.
