Jane McManus of ESPNNewYork.com reports that the Jets are spending well below their 2009 cap. The Jets seem to be balking when it comes to giving their players guaranteed dollars. That is one of the sticking points with CB Darrelle Revis, while OL Nick Mangold and LB David Harris are limited in what they can make by a rule stipulating raises this season are limited to a 30 percent increase of their prior salary.

Despite signing D’Brickashaw Ferguson — who guaranteed money isn’t absolutely guaranteed against catastrophic injury — and Vladimir Ducasse this week, the Jets are being tight with the purse strings. Last year the salary cap was $128M, and would’ve been raised this season. But in a year where teams are not bound to any cap, the Jets have spent around $104M including Ferguson’s contract, and $5M of that is to pay former OL Alan Faneca. So even under the old salary cap the Jets would have roughly $24M to allocate among Mangold, Harris and Revis. In reality, they could pay create contracts for the remainder of their core four that would be over that cap, and not stress about it too much with several free-agent signings likely coming off the books next season.

But the Jets aren’t.

With potential training camp holdouts on the horizon on Aug. 1, the lack of spending raises questions about what the Jets' overall strategy is.A close look at D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s contract shows that the left tackle is not getting as much guaranteed money as originally reported because, after the first season, his money may not be secured against a catastrophic injury if it kept him off the roster the following season.That may not be a stipulation other players will agree to after seeing Leon Washington traded to Seattle after suffering a gruesome leg injury in a game last season.

Woody Johnson says that the Jets are a business, and that he has to run it like a business. On Wall Street that would mean bonuses for your top producers after a banner year, but the Jets seem to be following a different business model.

Training camp opens Aug. 1 in Cortland, and it’s a date that is fast approaching.

This line scared me. Every day I grow concerned about the Jets being cheap and stubborn. Afraid to open the wallet up. They are shewed, even to all star caliber talent. Now in all honesty, maybe the Jets are setting a precedent. Maybe they feel these contracts are outrageous (Nnamdi) and they really don't want to cough up such an enormous contract. I sympathize with the Jets here a little. I give them credit for not just throwing money around and strapping themselves and handcuffing the team. However, they need to find some middle ground. (easier said then done) especially when the entire world thinks he's the best and unfortunately money is the barometer for which a player is judged ultimately.

Revis needs to come back down to earth and realize that's yes, he's important but other players around him need to be paid to keep this team intact. Taking a little less then 15mil isn't a crime. I think he can feed his family with that money. Unfortunately that makes to much sense and in this world greed rules everything.

I agree that it's frustrating that the front office aren't opening their wallets and getting the core players on long term deals, but they would be crazy to do so and then see the salary cap reintroduced once a new CBA agreement is reached - and you have to think a salary cap will be part of the deal with the owners looking to take more money from the players. Plus the 30% rule surely handcuffs them when it comes to reaching new deals for guys still on their rookie contracts.

in all fairness were not the only team holding off contracts until ther is a CBA here is a short list i can think of

Dallas - miles austin
Giants - steve smith, kiwanuka, osi
Colts - Peyton Manning
Pats - Tom Brady
Jets - mangold, revis, harris

And i'm sure their are others al well

I have to ask myself what is the Jets motivation here? If the article is accurate, we are well under the 09 cap, 10 would have had an increase. So I am guessing it is not as cap related as we may think. If they KNOW they cant make D Rev happy, (& I really don't believe in this & HOPE it wont come to this) trade him. I know we bitch about players wanting their money...but I still think the organization is not SHOWING him they appreciate him. Saying it in the media is one thing, but to actually SHOW a man his work, efforts & accomplishments are appreciated are very different. By no stretch am I saying give him the moon, but lets be FAIR. Yes its a business, but you cant stay in business if you let your top performers feel unappreciated & under paid. That is just what we see in the public view, who KNOWS the real feelings in the locker room. I hate the thought that an organization would appear to put a SB run on a back burner to $ & .00

we don't have all the detals but revis was offered a 100 million dollar extension that added six years to his curent 3 which was stated that he would finish his 3 years out
2010 1 mil
2011 5 mil
2012 15 mil

then for the remainder of the contract (2013-2017) averging 12-13 mil a season

and it wasn't enough for revis. brick on teh other hand got a similar offer and took it
