ganggreen2003 Icon : (17 November 2014 - 06:53 PM) Stanton for $325 Mil

ganggreen2003 Icon : (17 November 2014 - 06:54 PM) but the Marlins throw $325 million at him like nothing ever happened
ganggreen2003 Icon : (17 November 2014 - 06:55 PM) I predict he'll be a shell of himself and in 5 years he will be horrible player and the $ will still be weighing down the Marlins for the remainder of the contract
ganggreen2003 Icon : (17 November 2014 - 07:06 PM) 3 years ago I would of considered this kind of contract but after what happened to him this season and how he might be shocked to step into the batters box in 2015 is a HUGE risk when a team gives them $325 million
ganggreen2003 Icon : (17 November 2014 - 07:07 PM) these monster contracts are ridiculous to begin with

Being a bit overly dramatic aren't we?
Ummm......No. If we dont win it all this year and end up having to release other key players because we can't afford to pay them due to Revis' demands, what was the sense in giving him the money? He gets paid and we all feel like we've been robbed. We're the ones that will have to pay the increased prices at the stadium and at the box office in order to pay him. You know.....the money that comes out of my wallet and yours. If we don't get it done and win it all, what did we get for our money? False hope?

Would you say that he robbed us if he gets his money but then his play changes and all of a sudden his skill set was "off due to not practicing with his team"? What if he decides that he doesn't have to work as hard once he gets his "guaranteed" money? He can pretty much just sit at the line of scrimmage and just watch the WR go right by him if he wants to and he'd still get his money. $65 million guaranteed allegedly? I dont know about you but if I were guaranteed 65 million, I wouldnt risk my body any more than I have to. You have to be healthy to enjoy a payday like that. I'm not saying that he's going to do that, but it IS a possibility. Look at Albert Haynesworth. If that happened, it would be us getting held up at gunpoint & raped.

Revis is the Brett Favre of the Jets. He will hopefully sign but I guess he wanted to take training camp off. I wonder what kind of game shape he'll be in. Not physical shape......GAME shape. The combination of speed, physical attributes and mental. He can work out all he wants, but unless he's lining up against #1 caliber NFL receivers, he's going to get burned early this season whenever he does rejoin the team if he does at all this year.

I was referring to your little metaphor. Being upset over a football player holding out for more money I think I'd get over it after a while. But getting raped at gunpoint might be a bit more difficult to get over. But that's just me.

By the way I'll say what has been said many times already during this whole holdout situation. Ticket prices aren't high because of greedy players. The NFL gets most of it's revenue from it's TV contracts. You don't like the players getting paid millions. Tell people with Nielsen boxes on the TVs not to watch NFL games and tell everybody to boycott products like Budweiser, Doritos, Direct TV, Pepsi, Meinke, General Motors, Gatorade, Pizza Hut, and all the other companies that buy air time to show their advertisements during broadcasts of NFL games.

TV contracts are what pays the players salaries not you and I buying tickets.

There are a few things I have realized about Mr. Jet over a few topics.

1) He is a racist. By constantly using race as a battling tool.
2) He is an extreme Liberal. If you are on either extreme you are probabaly more wrong than right.
3) He is one of those people who will never admit fault, error or defeat.
4)His life sucks and he takes it out on people who don't share in his views.

I'll agree that the metaphor I used was overboard. I actually mean for it to read being held up at gunpoint. The rape part was actually left over from what I was originally going to post but changed my mind about it. I should learn to proofread my posts. After seeing it there, I was too late as you had already replied so I just kept it the way it was and ran with it.

No matter what, Revis or any other player in the league is not worth 150-165 million.

Perhaps. But there was a time not too long ago when many people thought no player was worth 1 million dollars or 5 million or 20 million. As long as the league keeps making billions in profits and the salary cap keeps going up...contract amounts will also rise with them.

Tim Cowlishaw started a Twitter tidal wave Sunday evening, posting in 140 characters that he heard Darrelle Revis was closing in on a deal that could be finalized on Wednesday.

Then on Tuesday, he followed that up with some more information about the All-Pro cornerback taping an interview, one that could've potentially been featured on Wednesday's episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks." That ignited another brush fire, creating another frenzy that got even crazier once AOL Fanhouse jumped into the deep end of the pool and corroborated Cowlishaw's report.

Turns out, as we had been reporting, none of this was completely accurate.

Cowlishaw, a Dallas Morning News Columnist and regular contributor on ESPN's "Around the Horn," has posted a mea culpa of sorts on his blog, explaining that he wasn't sure why things didn't work out the way his source said they would. None of that matters, Cowlishaw wrote, saying "So what happened in this case is irrelevant. It's on me."

Revis' holdout stands at 26 days and counting, and there doesn't appear to be much of a thaw in negotiations. A source familiar with the situation said the Jets, as of now, are not budging with their offer of 10 years, $122 million.

That, of course, can always change as things do in negotiations, but it's becoming more apparent by the day that someone will have to cave in and find that truly happy medium in order for this to get done.

It's getting down to a critical period here with training camp in the books and the Jets ready to suit up for their third preseason game tomorrow, which is the dress rehearsal for their Sept. 13 opener versus the Ravens on "Monday Night Football." They're 18 days away from kicking that game off, and sure Revis can show up tomorrow and still be effective against Anquan Boldin and the rest of Baltimore's receivers.

But as Dennis Thurman pointed out, there's a difference between being in shape and being in football shape, ready to take that physical pounding and having your body prepared for the sometimes grueling twists and turns it could take. Even if Revis magically ended his holdout today, he'd still have a ways to go before he's really in the shape Thurman would want to see him in.

ďItís like boxer," the defensive backs coach said. "You donít go and train for a boxing match for two weeks and say, ĎOk, letís go get in this championship boxing match and Iím just going to let you pummel me.í You have to prepare your body to hit.Ē
One way or another, Darrelle Revis will be a Jet
Posted at 7:38 AM on Thu., Aug. 26, 2010 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim Cowlishaw / Columnist E-mail News tips

"Revis and Jets announce new deal probably Wednesday. You heard it here first. Inside information!"

If I could take those 15 words I sent out into the Twitter world Sunday afternoon, if I could take a do-over on the matter of Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets, I would type:

"I think Revis and Jets get contract done sooner rather than later -- probably this week, maybe even Wednesday."

The words "I think'' would have gone a long way towards expressing my feelings although on Sunday I felt them very strongly and wasn't worried about being wrong. This deal, I truly believed, was almost done.

But it didn't get done Wednesday -- as you Jets fans know by now -- and I can't say for sure where it stands for this weekend. I have only a partial understanding of why what I honestly believed was about to take place failed to do so.

But why and how things unraveled doesn't matter. It's my mistake. I was wrong, and while I once saw a significant difference between a column or story that I spend hours writing for The Dallas Morning News and a 15-word "tweet,'' I no longer do.

It is one of the things I like least about this business when I hear a reporter blame his or her sources after either getting beat on a story or having things go differently than they had said they would.

"My source lied to me. My source was misled by someone else.''

Doesn't matter. The person who writes the story (or Tweet) is the one responsible.

So what happened in this case is irrelevant. It's on me.

I didn't go about it with any real thoughts that I could be wrong. If you knew my source and the information I had, I think you would understand that.

And I certainly didn't do it to stir things up, to make life miserable for Jets beat writers or to call attention to myself. My position as a columnist at The Dallas Morning News and on ESPN's Around the Horn has given me more attention than I will ever need.

I think when this is over and Revis has come to terms with the Jets, I may be able to figure out why it didn't happen as it was presented to me. I'm not sure about that, but I think I will.
In the meantime, there are degress of "wrongness'' in this business, and I'm glad only that I wasn't at the worst end of that. The people who actually fabricate quotes, events, stories, sources -- Scott Templeton for any of you that watched Season 5 of The Wire -- they are at the extreme end.

Somewhere after that come the mistakes of telling readers inaccurate information as to where a player is headed. If you write that Cliff Lee is about to become a Yankee and he becomes a Ranger, well, you can fall back and say, "but I had good sources and things changed..."
Doesn't matter. It never happened.

In Revis' case, he isn't going to sign with a rival like the Giants or the Patriots. This story is not going to have that unhappy of an ending for Jets fans. One way or another, new long-term megadeal like a Pittsburgh radio station reported Tuesday, or same old deal he already has in place, Revis is going to be a Jet.

We just don't know the date.

It could still turn out to be this Saturday which is what I was originally told ("Wednesday or Saturday").

And if it happens....I won't bring it up.
Graziano: No need to panic over Revis
Holdout of Jets corner likely won't have any impact
By Dan Graziano / SNY.tv
Buzz up! Post on facebook fan commentsFan Comments (0) print this pageprint email this pageemail
If various reports are true, Darrelle Revis could play in a preseason game as a late tuneup. (AP)

Everybody needs to stop panicking, OK?

This Darrelle Revis holdout has people in a nervous uproar, and once it's all over (probably within the next couple of days), everybody's going to feel pretty silly for how much time they spent worrying about it.

Players hold out. Happens every year. The end of this is that Revis is going to play for the Jets this year and is almost 100 percent certain to suit up for the first game of the regular season. Who in the world cares how he gets there as long as he does?

Let's backtrack a little bit. Over the weekend, a Dallas Morning News columnist named Tim Cowlishaw posted on his Twitter page that he had inside information that a Revis deal would be done soon and announced Wednesday. People went nuts. Reporters who cover the Jets and the NFL called around and got nothing but denials -- no change, it's not done, Cowlishaw is wrong and so on.

But it felt weird to leave it at that. Cowlishaw's not on the Jets beat or the NFL beat. He had nothing to lose by staying silent on the Revis story and much to lose by piping up and being wrong. If he didn't actually have the information and feel good about it, why would he have posted it to Twitter?

So I kept making calls on this, and Tuesday I came into contact with someone close to the situation who told me Cowlishaw was right, that the two sides have been talking all along and making good progress, and that they were "almost there." A deal should be announced in the coming days. I wrote this story for AOL FanHouse, it got picked up all over the place and shot down in most places as those same reporters went out and got those same denials they'd gotten Sunday.

Ever since the story ran, I've been bombarded by breathless Jets fans on my Twitter account. (It's @DanGrazianoAOL, where all are welcome to bombard me on any topic and I'm always happy to respond). The general tone of these communications have centered on whether I am somehow toying with Jet fans' emotions, 'BSing' them as one put it, and if I stand by my story even as others deny it.

Of course I stand by my story. My same source told me Wednesday that nothing had changed -- the two sides continued talking, were making good progress and a deal would be done soon. As for whether I'm toying with Jet fans' emotions or 'BSing' them -- why would I do that? I'm a reporter. I get information, I give it to you, the reading public. That's my job.

This story has really turned weird, and now seems to be about the way it's being reported. Which is why everybody needs to take a deep breath and relax. Revis will be signed soon, and he'll be playing. I'd wager he plays in the final preseason game next week just to tune up for Week 1. And once that happens, Jet fans are going to forget that any of this ever happened.

Think about it: What's really been lost here? Revis surely didn't mind skipping Cortland. He's a world-class athlete looking for a record contract, so what are the chances he's let himself go? He's obviously working out and getting ready for a season he plans to play. And because of the role he fills on the Jets' defense (scouting and then covering the best receiver on whatever team they're playing that week), it's not as if it's essential for him to be out there practicing with the team every day. He's going to do his own thing, which is what they want him to do, and it's not going to matter one bit that he sat out all or most of training camp.

Yes, the thought of playing the season -- or even its first couple of games -- without Revis is a justifiably unsettling thought for Jet fans. But it's not going to happen. He's going to sign. He's going to play. And really, the best thing for everybody to do is just relax.

There was an interview w. Jason Taylor on SNY having a 'keep it real' session.

His comments on the Revis situation was, he's a proven vet, and while practice is important, there are guys that can afford to miss practice, and there are guys that arent. Revis is a guy that could afford to miss some practice and some meaningless preseason games.

He wasn't saying that it's a positive thing, but merely that Revis missing a bit of time won't be the biggest of deals. If anything, it's given the young guys the mindset of being a starter and playing valuable minutes.

the difference is you just repeated what the talking heads say so I guess you like to sniff theirs while on the other had Ive said over a decade ago and i don't watch talking heads. its my own truth which now most of you young fans have come to realize. But aside of that I was just pointing out that many times we are on the same page, its just you like to argue.

Swissle .......... LT and Favre are 2 guys that have done this for yrs so sure some guys can , the problem is that the new guys won't have any reps with revis in there so that will be the weak link because they are learning how to play without him which is not the same as with him.It could cause some misunderstanding in games for the young /new players.
