Oh man don't be so one-sided.

It's a big circle...

Fans want to see better teams, in bigger stadiums, with cheerleaders, and pep rally's and state-of-the-art practice facilities to attract more expensive free agents!

Someone has to pay for it!

No one is at fault here, it is just the nature of things. If something is going to get this popular it will become more and more extravagant and therefore more and more expensive.
Exactly, its all economics. It works both ways. the ticket prices aren't high just cause the owners, and not just cause the players either. Its a combination of Both. And anyone who has done finances for a business knows this.

For instance lets say a ford dealership hires a mechanic at 20 an hour. He has to bill him out at 105 and hour to cover overhead, payroll taxes, benefit, rent, tools, equipment, admin people, etc. now if eveyrone starts making 25 an hour they will have to raise their rates a bit to help cover it. Its basic economics , which unfortunately most people don't understand. If you want to blame one side o high prices blame yourself. The fans. If we didn't tune in TV ratings would go down, ads would cost less, if we didn't go to games the ticket prices would go down to avoid blackouts etc. WE the fans set the market by using the product. Football is in high demand and the NFL is the best supply out there so they can set high rates. the AFL doens't cost that much for a ticket. why do you think that is? Cause the people aren't buying it. why do you think a 30 second commerical for the SB cost like 5 millions dollars? cause over 100 million people watch it!

By Steiny on 03. Sep, 2010

In a new twist in the Darrelle Revis saga, Jason Cole of Yahoo sports is speculating Darrelle Revis may have played his last game in a Jets uniform.
Here’s a little piece of information for Ryan and the rest of the New York Jets: If Revis doesn’t get a new contract soon, New York doesn’t have to worry about the star cornerback showing up. Ever.

As the clock ticks to the beginning of the NFL season, the relationship between the Jets and Revis is ticking toward an end. A divorce, really. That might sound like hysteria to some but it’s reality.

[..]

If the Jets can’t bridge the gap between what they are offering Revis and what he believes they promised him at the end of last season, he’s not showing up, period.

As in ever again.

[..]

To put it in another perspective, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning will soon reset the bar for what the top players in the league are worth. The Colts will be lucky – yes, lucky – to get Manning’s deal done for less than an average of $25 million a year.

And if the top quarterback in the league is worth $25 million a year, what is the top cornerback or defensive end, left tackle or wide receiver – all guys who drastically impact the quarterback – are going to be worth?

There’s going to come a point where $16 million a year for Revis is a decent price.

The Jets can counter that by saying that they’re doing Revis a favor by redoing his contract now, at least one year in advance of free agency. That’s reasonable, but here’s another way of looking at it: If Revis plays out his contract over the next three years, he gets $21 million. The Jets then would be forced to put a franchise tag (assuming the franchise tag still exists) for a minimum of $18 million for 2013 (based on the fact that Revis’ 2012 salary is scheduled to be $15 million.

That’s $39 million over four years, but then the averages start to really jump, going way north of $20 million a year. From that perspective, $16 million a year looks like a good price.

But more important than any of that is a simple fact: Either the Jets get this done or they never have Revis again.

What happens if Revis sits out the year? Is he going to sit out until the Jets no longer have rights to him? I doubt we trade him.

I hate the comparison of a QB to any position. period. revis is a CB. all teams have to do is avoid them and lose their first option and revis becomes almost a non factor except for negating 1 WR. Peyton manning however gets the ball eveyr single offensive snap in the game and has the ability to win games. Manning can make up for a lack of any position on the field. ANY position. as we learned last year in the playoffs revis cannot

2) He is an extreme Liberal. If you are on either extreme you are probabaly more wrong than right.
3) He is one of those people who will never admit fault, error or defeat.
4)His life sucks and he takes it out on people who don't share in his views.

I'm not saying it is all the owners fault, but it is where it started. As football made more money, the owners still tried to keep down expenses (including player salaries), the players went through various ways to get more money, and as the money has grown all sides have done what they can to get their piece.

But my point is that regardless of what the individual players make, the owners are not going to cut the price of Flyhi's ticket just because he bleeds green and snots up white. Let's look at it like this, does the fact that Jacksonville can't fill their stadium stop them from getting the tv revenue? No, the only reason they want to move is because they can make more peripheral money from being in a larger city (not ticket sales).

I seldom complain about how or why a thread turns . Many of these topics are repeated every season.Sometimes its the same people and sometimes its new people .
Jetsfans115 is correct about financing except that the greed factor is the biggest element by far which negates commons sense.

honestly, is there even another team out there that

a) is competitive

b) willing to pay him

c) has the money?

I can't think of any, the bucs could sign him, but they aren't competitive...

second question, if revis holds out, and IF we win the bowl...does he get a ring? Does everyone finally admit that the other 10 guys on the field are pretty good too?

Of course that’s the day the deal gets done, but here are some of the thoughts I had about Revis deal that in the car on the way back …

Commendable on All Sides – You have to credit both the team and the player for coming together on this. Revis came down off some high demands for the sake of the team and his legacy, and the team made good on a promise to renegotiate a player in a unique situation, but a situation that warranted addressing and giving him a lot of money by adding a single year onto his current deal.

My thoughts on both? Revis’s competitive spirit allowed him to back off his past demands, while the team knew that if you are ever going to break the rules, this is the guy for which to do it. Some are arguing that what if another player demands similar compensation? There is now precedent by the Jets to re-do deals with many years left. In my mind, it’s a good precedent: simply become a top five player in the whole league with more than two years left on your deal, and then we can talk about your contract.

On Average, Revis Is Paid More Than All But One NFL Corner Not in Fantasyland – Free Agent CB Dunta Robinson just signed with the Falcons this past March was awarded a six year $57 million deal with $25.5 million in guarantees – the best thus far aside from the Nnamdi Asomougha deal. In his recent signing, Revis blew out the guarantee money with upwards of $32 million in guarantees, and he surpassed the annual number on Dunta’s deal by two million. It sets a new “market level” but invalidates the deal that Aso received by the Raiders by bringing the corner position back to a more normalized level.

Disproving the CBA Excuse – With other elite players like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are still without deals, I think that in a small way, the Jets have been proving that market leading deals can get done in these uncertain economic times. Good for them in taking a chance, but this was a necessary step if this team was realistically talking about a Super Bowl.

Increasing Importance of the Position? – From a 30,000 foot view, I think that the Revis signing is a monument to an emerging NFL trend. For time immemorial, the gruff “in the trenches” nature and Parcellsian logic of building from the inside out have been what’s ruled the NFL, but I think we are witnessing a shift. When the Patriots would routinely best the Colts in the mid 2000s, it was because their secondary would mug the Colts receivers. Their secondary was good, but was more physical than great. Belichick took advantage of the rules of the time. The Colts complained, and now the rules on passer interference are more strictly enforced — thus the Ty Law Rule. Couple that with bew rules to protect the passer, and the game is ever increasingly more passer centric.

Why does this matter? it’s put a premium on elite coverage skills from players who can routinely lock down their responsibilities. That’s the reason the Jets went out to get Cromartie as a second, and Wilson as a third corner. Against most NFL teams, having one solid coverage player might be a fine tactic, but what remains to be seen is whether building the way the Jets are can stop elite passing attacks like the Colts, Packers and Patriots, teams who can prove that an opponent is only as strong as their weakest secondary player. Tannenbaum has joked that Rex can’t have enough corners, and there’s a reason for this. Could it be that he feels like he’ll take coverage skills over pass rushing skills? Instead of building from the time honored inside out, Ryan seems to be putting an emphasis on building his defense back to front … something that flies in the face of most conventional wisdom.

The theory is it works both ways. good cover guys will give the other guys more time to get to the QB, while a good pass rausher will give the DBs less time to have to cover a guy. In theory both should be equally effective
