Over the last 5 years or so there have been 1 or 2 cases a year. Vincent Jackson is also the latest.

Add Marcus McNeil to that, both are set to not show up until like week 12 this season.

We recently suggested that, when it comes to working out a new deal for cornerback Darrelle Revis, G.M. Mike Tannenbaum's hands are tied by the reluctance of owner Woody Johnson to authorize the funds necessary to get the deal done.

On Monday, Johnson denied that the impasse has arisen from a lack of money.

"The main issue with the New York Jets is total compensation," Johnson said Monday, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. "When you get to some of the details like the guaranteed money or the length of the contract -- all of those things that are a part of the contract -- but to get to the point where we haven't even negotiated that because we're so far apart on the other ones. I'd love to sit down and negotiate. We can be flexible."

Johnson reiterated that the team has offered both a long-term deal and a short-term "Band-Aid" solution. Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that the long-term deal included total compensation in excess of $100 million. The "Band-Aid" would have paid Revis more than his current $1 million salary in 2010, but less than the $5.3 million they'll pay left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson this year.

"This is my eleventh year," Johnson said. "We've never had an inability [with] lack of resources to sign whoever we wanted. We can go down the list. You want to talk about Brett Favre or even Mark Sanchez in terms of signing the players we want. We can do it. But we have to do it in the context of what's best for the organization."

That's fine, but is it "best for the organization" to approach Revis' agents only two days after the Jets were knocked out of the playoffs and suggest ripping up the last three years of his rookie deal, which he held out to get in the first place, without saying that: (1) the Nnamdi Asomugha contract, with an average value of $15.1 million is an aberration, not a benchmark; and (2) the 30-percent rule and the reallocation rule will affect the total dollars and the guaranteed money?

Even though the Jets are now crouching behind the gap in total dollars as the primary impediment to working out a deal, the amount of truly guaranteed money is a huge part of the picture. They can offer him a deal worth $500 million, but all that really matters is the amount that's truly guaranteed once he signs his first name and last name to the bottom of the contract.

Ferguson signed because, for reasons neither known nor apparent, he wasn't troubled by the complete lack of an injury guarantee or the application of a year-by-year skill guarantee. Revis wants $15.1 million per year -- and he wants the appropriate amount of guaranteed money to be guaranteed upon signing, not after he gets through 2010 and then 2011 and then 2012 and then 2013 without suffering a serious injury or without suddenly losing the stuff that makes him, as coach Rex Ryan says, the best defensive player in the game.

So, basically, the Jets' new approach is to paint Revis as greedy. Put simply, they're saying he wants more money than the Jets think he's worth, and they think he's worth a lot.

This new approach might win them some points in a P.R. battle they had previously bungled, but it won't get Revis into camp in the foreseeable future. Or thereafter.

I don't think Revis is worth almost $1 mill a game. No way. I can see a prolific QB getting that type of money, a guy who can practically win you a game by himself, but a CB? No way. I don't care how good he is.

I think giving a time limit between the management and the player to agree to terms should be a 30 day period and if both side can't finalized the contract than the fans should be reimbursed for the price of their tickets by 30 % thus hurting the pockets of both parties and anyone feel free to pile on here.

True but then there are player sin the same situation who show up still. like mangold, harris, steve smith (from the giants), all outplayed there rookie deals and are in teh final year and want a new contract and all of them showed up. if anyone has the most beef its the giants steve smith since they have nobody else to sign. problem is the CBA is stopping everyone from new deals. Chris johnson, Peyton Manning, tom brady are all top 3 at their position and want new deals. brady and manning are in contract years and both showed up.

I understand revis wants a new contract. i 100% agree he deserves it and the jets are rtying to give it to him, but they are bound by rules. its bad timing for revis but it is what it is. there is a right way and a wrong way to handle it and this is teh wrong way

Jets don't have to try doing anything. He IS greedy.

If Revis holds out for the season the ultimate Justice would be if the Jets won a Superbowl.
I love Revis as a player but Im sick and tired of this drama and at this point I could care less if he plays for the Jets again. Sad to say this because Id like to see him as a long time Jet but not at the expense of not paying other players and keeping a good team together.

Some show up and others don't. Revis held out as a rookie. This will be his 2nd time in 4 years. Doesn't look good. On the other hand. How much of a dumbass/knucklehead would Mangold be if he destroys a knee this year? From a financial standpoint?, you see what I'm saying?, I mean I definitely appreciate him coming in and playing no question but if bad things happen to him then he looks like a boob.

Just sayin'

Ok look I really don't think Revis is going to be away for to long. Now something will give, either the Jets and D Rev will work out a deal in principle or he'll show up. I do believe one of these will happen before the end of training camp, how much time is going to go by?, that I don't know however something will give. Tanny is too go at what he does to let this thing dwell.

Now we don't know the particulars of his offers but according to those numbers if he's batting his eyes to those numbers then I say let him rot. Now are we certain on this numbers?, probably not. Do the beat writers know for sure?, probably not. Were all trying to take a educated guess at what the hells going on.

They will find some common ground, clearly it's going to take time however if Revis expectations are too high it might just spiral out of control and to new depths.

NY Jets general manager discusses Revis contract situation
August 2, 11:03 PM · Tyson Rauch - New York Jets Examiner

New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum held a press conference to discuss the Darrelle Revis contract negotiations. Here are some of the highlights, courtesy of newyorkjets.com:

On the latest on Darrelle Revis…
"We’re disappointed that he’s not here. It’s really his prerogative not to be here. The lines of communication will remain open, and we’ll see where we go. I can tell you this, that over the last 72 hours we offered a long term deal that would’ve made him a Jet for life, we offered him a short-term deal which a lot of you have referred to as a “band-aid,” and we offered to get together and all three of those were rebuffed."

On what’s next…
"The next step is the lines of communication are opened and we remain committed to finding a solution that makes sense for him and makes sense for us. Two things that we all agreed upon is that Darrelle outplayed his contract and it needed to be addressed and that he has three years to go on his contract. With that said, we have to find something that works for both sides and we remain committed to doing that. When that will happen is hard to say but he’s not here and that’s his prerogative and we’ll move forward from there."

On when they will talk next…
"Well like I said, what we’ve done in the last three days is made three different offers and all those offers were rebuffed. Lack of communication hasn’t been a problem. In this situation we’ve talked frequently so it is hard to say what will happen next."

On what the Revis problem is…
"We have a disagreement on total compensation. Again, the two things we can agree upon is that he played extraordinarily well and he outperformed his contract, he has three years to go on that contract. Just to give you a little more detail, the first thing I did for the offseason. The Tuesday after we lost the Colts game we were in Mobile, AL and we called his agent and said we have to get something done. We have spent more time, more effort, more man hours, [manager, Football Administration] Jackie Davidson, [Director, Football Administration] Ari Nissim, Rex, Woody Johnson, discussing this situation and we’re trying to solve the problem and come up with something that works for both sides and again the two things we can agree upon is that he outperformed his contract and has three years to go. So on those two variables, we need to find out, how we can find a landing spot that works for both sides."

On an offer of being the highest paid cornerback in the league…
"I don’t want to get into the specifics of the offer because I just don’t think that’s right. What I can say though is he has three years to go and we’re in a really interesting dynamic with the last year of the collective bargaining agreement, with all the complicated rules. We’ve told them multiple times that we’re completely flexible to signing bonuses, option bonuses, roster bonuses and how guarantees are done and what we’ve seen around the league that there’s a myriad of ways that things have been solved in terms of how veterans have been extended. It’s hard, it’s complicated, but hopefully there’s a solution that’s good for them and good for us."

On how else the deal could get done…
"Well, one of the things we offered was just to get the other side to talk, that was me driving to his house to see him and his agent, Rex Ryan to see him and his agent. And again, that was just more of our way of saying we appreciate what you’ve done we’re really glad you’re a Jet, we want you to remain a Jet for a long time and understand how well you’ve played, we recognize that. Here are these other issues, let’s collectively move forward and see where we can land that’s good for you and good for us."

On if the meeting was rebuffed…
"We did not have the meeting."

On what else that could be offered…
"I try to remain flexible as far as solving problems, and I’ve done enough deals in my career to know that if you can get an agreement on total compensation that typically, you can solve other problems. You’ve got to get in a room, you’ve got to hash it out, you’ve got to work through these rules that are extraordinarily complicated for all of us. But once you reach an agreement on total compensation, you got the big problem solved and then you can knock out these small ones. It’s hard but if you move forward in a collaborative partnership, you can find a solution. But again, fundamentally, we don’t have an agreement until the compensation is agreed on, that is threshold issue we have."

While there are two sides to every story, it seems to me like the Jets are doing their due diligence in terms of negotiating. If Revis is declining invites for face to face discussions, this is going to be one long, ugly holdout. Initially I was in favor of the player, but now it appears that the All-Pro is looking to break the bank or sit. If I were the Jets I would do two things:

1) Put an immediate gag order on the players when it comes to discussing Darrelle Revis and his hold out. One less distraction.

2) Start negotiating with Nick Mangold and or David Harris, two players that are in the last year of their contract and are actually in camp. If Gang Green can get deals done with other players it would start to put some pressure on Revis. I understand Darrelle is very important to the defense, but I just cannot see the Jets giving him quarterback type of money. [ AGREED! ]

I personally do not believe ANYONE is worth getting paid 1,000,000, for esentially a 4-5 hour sporting event. For that matter, no matter what thier job is.

I am really starting to get fed up with this shit in all of sports. It is too the point where a fan cannot even afford to go to a game, or by team merchandice without spending a fortune. I live in Texas, I am a Jet fan, and to watch the games on TV, it would cost me $294 to get the NFL Package to watch just the Jet games. Or whatever to go to a sports bar. To get a nice JETS Polo, it will cost at least $75. If I wanted to go to the game in Denver, $750 for seats on the sideline with the Jets....I cant afford all this shit, and this guy wants more money.......
