Yes, the Jets need a receiver, but it's the deepest receiver draft in years, and they can find a good one in the second round. This would mark the fifth straight year with a defensive pick in Round 1.
As that noted NFL prognosticator Bugs Bunny once said, I'll do it, but I'll probably hate myself in the morning.

The New York Jets will win Super Bowl XLV.

I know, I know. Any football follower can come up with 102 reasons why it won't happen, from the inexperience of quarterback Mark Sanchez and a lackluster preseason for the offense to the holdout of cornerback Darrelle Revis and early season absences of wide receiver Santonio Holmes (suspension) and outside linebacker Calvin Pace (injury).

Plus the Jets are the "trendy" Super Bowl pick ... meaning virtually no one will actually pick them to win it all because the team is, well, trendy. (Dwell on that contradiction for a moment; it's the cousin of Yogi's "No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded.")

But face it: The real reason people laugh off the notion of the "other" New York team winning a title has nothing to do with their quarterback play or their coach or the bluster of "Hard Knocks," and everything to do with the fact they're the Jets.

This franchise is known not just for losing, but for losing on a tragicomic scale. No playoff appearances from 1970-80, only one (on an 8-8 season) from 1987-96. It was during that period that as a fan I sat through the Fake Spike Game, and the Kotite Error, and the endless refrain of Same Ol' Jets and Just End The Season and Gangrene and the New York Jest.

In a vacuum, the Super Bowl pick makes sense if you look at personnel and additions and the arc of the team. All things being equal, if this were Franchise X, many wouldn't have any reservations at all about picking this team. (My childhood fandom makes me more likely to run away screaming from this pick than tagging the team as a Super Bowl contender. Some scars never heal.)

And since 1997, the year Bill Parcells took over a 1-15 team, the Jets have had nine winning seasons and six playoff appearances, including two runs to the AFC Championship Game. There are more than a few teams that have not done that.

New York comes into the season with the No. 1 defense and top-rated rushing attack that subtracts a worn Thomas Jones (check out his numbers toward the end of the season) and adds LaDainian Tomlinson (as a third-down back) to a backfield led by Shonn Greene. Sanchez showed postseason poise, and should reverse his 12 TD/20 INT ratio. The defense will remain dominant, with or without Revis. And the Jets welcome the pressure put upon them and applied themselves, from coach Rex Ryan on down. The whole brashness/cockiness thing doesn't really win or lose games, but you can make an argument that confidence, real confidence, does.

Here are some other predictions that may seem ridiculous now -- and worse come January:

The Indianapolis Colts will not make the playoffs. Their offensive line is in flux, the running game often is absent and their defense has been wracked by injury. And there is that bizarre/random factoid to consider that must have something to it more than just a "curse:" eight of the past 11 Super Bowl losers have failed to make the playoffs.

Neither will the Cincinnati Bengals. Talk about a trendy pick about to blow up. The Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles are two other 2009 playoff teams that will be sitting out the 2010 postseason. New kids will be the Houston Texans (finally), the Tennessee Titans, the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins, which will secure a wild card slot.

The New York Giants are going nowhere. The G-men have the look of a team with some talent, more injuries and even more question marks. Another 8-8 campaign seems right for a squad that is good/flawed enough to win/lose against almost any team in the league.

The Buffalo Bills are in great position to win ... the Jake Locker Sweepstakes. Buffalo is staring at 3-13, but will have a shot at finally grabbing their quarterback of the future, perhaps the University of Washington signal caller.

The Green Bay Packers (not the Minnesota Vikings, which will squeak into the playoffs), will dominate the NFC and ride home field advantage to beating the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship game.

Meanwhile, the Jets will beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC title game, setting up a Jets-Packers Super Bowl XLV in Dallas next February.

A blog reader named Teddy R made a rather stunning prediction, if only because it exactly mirrors my own -- which is either an omen, or proof-positive it will never happen:

New York Jets 24 Green Bay Packers 21, in the first overtime Super Bowl.

If you are going to go wrong, go big. So go ahead and laugh. These predictions may very well crash and burn. But the Super Bowl pick makes sense, regardless of what I feel about it in the morning.

I agree. People are still stuck in the 80's and early 90's with their thoughts about the Jets. The Jets have been having success the last decade. AFC championship game and a few playoff runs. 2nd best in the East. It's time for US to take that step forward. To get back to the AFC championship game. If he can avoid the Peyton (Rex's killer) I think we'll go to the bowl or at least have a good chance.

If you could only hear some of the shit my giant fans friends say

i love the we overpaid for a shitty CB one. Its amazing how jealous they are. in reality the giants were the better franchise for 30 years but in the past 15 years its been pretty even except for the 1 SB win.

Giants fans for the most part remind me of Phin fans. They just say some painfully idiotic things that have little to no bearing. Unfortunately, I got a couple Giants fans in my circle and trust me, it's hard to tolerate. I know

and what more frustrating is the fact you say something bad about the giants and its cause you hate them lol. I d not hate teh giants, their fans however sometimes i do, but the team i don't. I'm just objective. I cna't understand looking at their roster why their fans think there a top team. I even had one tell me that revis couldn't shut down their steve smith and when i pointed out how he shut dwon way better WRs like moss, AJ, the better steve smith etc he had the nerve to tell me that smith is better then Andre Johnson. I alsmot pee'd myself form laughing that he thinks that cause smith had 1 good seaosn he is even near AJ

The best thing to do is just laugh it off. Trying to talk with some of them is redundant beyond belief

When I became a football fan, the Colts were a laughingstock. I remember in 5th grade, I won the class spelling bee and the teacher awarded me a "Colts" key chain. I left it in my desk on purpose. The Patriots went 9-39 at one point before they brought Tuna in. Past results don't guarantee future returns.
