Azjetfan is the nyjetsfan #1 pick
azjetfan Icon : (02 May 2015 - 01:22 PM) Phi a took Ajaji
Smedsthejet Icon : (02 May 2015 - 01:33 PM) Some depth on the line with the Harrison pick
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 01:43 PM) I read the scouting report for Harrison, the scout said he has probowl talent but has a work ethic concern.
santana Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:10 PM) Who the hell is Bryce petty
azjetfan Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:20 PM) Tom Pettys brother
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:22 PM) Jets should take Collins with one of their 7th rounders if there
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:22 PM) He has more upside for a 7th rounder than anyone else
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:22 PM) He can start right away at RT
HarlemHxC814 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:29 PM) He said he won't sign
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:32 PM) so he doesn't want to be drafted?
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:33 PM) If Collins doesn't get drafted, he can't enter next years draft. He can only if he is drafted and sits out. So I guess he has to go undrafted
V DidDy 210 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:41 PM) going undrafted makes the most sense for collins
V DidDy 210 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 03:41 PM) but for teams, drafting him and dealing with his holdout makes more sense
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:19 PM) Zac Stacy was traded to us for our 7th
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:21 PM) Jets also drafted a NT with our other 7th
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:21 PM) 6'4 330 DL who is very strong
V DidDy 210 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:25 PM) zac stacy for a 7th
V DidDy 210 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:25 PM) well can't complain about that
MikeGangGree... Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:29 PM) So we have 4 rbs now
V DidDy 210 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:31 PM) still would have rather taken a runner on collins but i can't complain with depth
V DidDy 210 Icon : (02 May 2015 - 04:32 PM) i mean they can't expect to carry 4 rb though no?
azjetfan Icon : (02 May 2015 - 05:50 PM) Collins would have been a waste. He would not have signed. At least we have something to show for our pick. Worst case scenario is we trade or release one of our backs.
azjetfan Icon : (02 May 2015 - 05:56 PM) I know it's hard to tell without seeing a win loss record yet but this regime seems really on point.
azjetfan Icon : (02 May 2015 - 05:56 PM) For the first time in my life I can say I feel comfortable with the people making the decisions.
azjetfan Icon : (02 May 2015 - 05:57 PM) I was close with Parcells but he seemed like a short term fixer and didn't care about the long term
MikeGangGree... Icon : (02 May 2015 - 06:57 PM) SUCK FOR THE DUCK
MikeGangGree... Icon : (02 May 2015 - 06:57 PM) .......oh wait
santana Icon : (Yesterday, 01:13 AM) Well that was a disappointment
Chadforpresi... Icon : (Yesterday, 01:24 AM) I like getting Stacy for our 7th rounder, assuming he can handle the fact he won't be a feature back (yikes)
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:31 AM) I like the trade, hes a quality back and adds more depth to our backfield
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:32 AM) Macc has pretty much killed it this offseason
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:32 AM) He has turned this roster around, he has added talent and competition all over.
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:33 AM) We still aren't great at QB, but our overall football team is good. We have a realistic shot at making a playoff run
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:33 AM) We may have the best defense in football. We have a great DL and secondary, that is gonna be tough on offenses when you can stop the run, pressure the QB, and blanket the receivers
ganggreen2003 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:23 PM) ok now it's time for this team to take all this talent and do something anything below a 10-6 season will be a disappointment
ganggreen2003 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:24 PM) the only still glaring issue is QB
ganggreen2003 Icon : (Yesterday, 09:25 PM) we got the WR problem solved, we got probably one of the best Defenses in the game and we have addressed the OL but QB will still be the glaring issue
Chaos Icon : (Today, 09:34 AM) jets cleaning house
azjetfan Icon : (Today, 05:57 PM) I'm excited about this year. Could be a good year for the Jets.
ganggreen2003 Icon : (Today, 07:32 PM) weird how they cleaned house in the scouting department after such a successful draft and off-season so far
azjetfan Icon : (Today, 07:36 PM) I assume they didn't bring much to the table
santana Icon : (Today, 08:41 PM) Have to clean the table
santana Icon : (Today, 09:08 PM) Fuck the rangers
santana Icon : (Today, 09:08 PM) face off dominated holtby gtfo
Jetsfan0099 Icon : (Today, 09:18 PM) La'el Collins is meeting with Rex Ryan tonight

By Bassett on 08. Sep, 2010

In last week’s Hard Knocks, Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan discussed the downside of signing high priced talent like Revis, Brick Mangold and others … that there’s not a lot of money to spend elsewhere in the coming years. So what to do? Are Jets are already heading off the salary cap at the proverbial pass?

While the team has shrewdly used overvalued (by others) draft picks over the past few years (Jenkins, Edwards, Holmes) to amass talent, the Jets have still done quite well for themselves in their then more limited drafting, like the 2009 class (Sanchez, Greene, Slauson) which now boasts a 100% rate of return on starters.

With all the ways that the team has been able to upgrade, the Jets now have more of a luxury to start looking at deeper impact via their drafts with players like Wilson, Conner and Ducasse in this draft class. While these guys aren’t traditional starters right now, it’s not going to be long before at least two of the three are.

So with the more forward looking strategy, are the Jets trying a new turn by collecting young talents that other teams might have too quickly soured on? Look no further than Cody Brown, Jarron Gilbert & Marcus Dixon (more on him later). The first two players were drafted before the 70th pick of the 2009 draft class, and who are now on the Jets practice squad, while Dixon was an UDFA in ’08.

As the defensive line has aged, I’ve wanted the Jets to draft some more defensive front seven players in the past few years. Since 2005, the team has only drafted two players who’ve really stayed in the picture: David Harris and Vernon Gholston. Adding Brown & Gilbert, at little cost, comes with a risk .. they could be all-out busts … but also could be great moves for a team that in two years time might not be able to spend big free agent dollars.

Jarron Gilbert
6-5 / 285 / San Jose State / 3rd rd. (68 overall)
Analysis: Famed YouTube pool jumper-outer, the son of a former NFL player (Daren Gilbert, Saints 85-88), Gilbert led the NCAA as a senior with 22 TFL and 9.5 sacks in 2008. Athletically, Gilbert is a freak: 4.76 40 time, 35.5 vert … not bad for a 6-5 285 pounder. Ryan must see the promise in Gilbert, a player he liked enough to fly to SJ State’s Pro Day to work out during the spring of ’09. It’s no secret that Ryan was looking to get younger on his line this year via the draft (Odrick), but Gilbert could be a very nice project for the Jets. Built to be a pure 4-3 Tackle / 3-4 End in Ryan’s scheme, coupled with his athleticism could be a very nice combination down the road.

Since being drafted, the Bears have looked for more “impact plays” from him and were disappointed with the results. While a player like Ropati Pitoitua held promise for the Jets this season, it came from a few years of working with him to help him better understand leverage. The same is true for Gilbert, he needs to better understand technique to make an NFL squad, and there’s none better than Ryan’s guys to teach him how to put it together. While it might take some patience … the good news for the Jets? No one else put in a waiver claim on Gilbert, meaning that Gilbert might be a safe option to keep in the squad for the whole year. Even if another team tried to sign him, Gilbert has to sign the deal too, so Rex might be able to convince him that staying with the Jets on the practice squad would be the best thing even if just for a year as he could be a solid contributor in a year or so for this defense.

Cody Brown
6-2 / 244 // UConn / 2nd rd. ’09 (63 overall)
Analysis: Part of the ’09 NFL Draft busting class (Donald Brown, Darius Butler, Will Beatty) from UConn, Brown was a second rounder who was a work in progress, but who had tons of upside and who went to the Cardinals at the end of the second round. As a junior, Brown had 16.5 TFL and 7.5 sacks. A solid athlete, Brown tested well but did have a disappointing Combine 40-time of 4.84 and rebounded during his Pro Day (4.60). During his draft process, he was mentioned alongside names like Clint Sintim, Brian Cushing, and Tyrone McKenzie. A converted DE, Brown plays bigger than his size and looks to be a possible 3-4 rush linebacker (Rush End) or maybe an ILB for the Jets if they don’t like him there. Brown has solid pass rush and run defense skills which would make one assume that if they could work on his tackling in space and coverage skills, they would try him out as an outside linebacker first because he plays above his size, but that he might be an insider.

Oh that's where I know Jarron Gilbert from. No doubt. I hope maybe he can develop into a solid DE.
