Right now, the Jets have 81 players on their roster. By rule, they must be down to 80 by Tuesday and, of course, to 53 by Sept. 4. Here's an analysis of the roster, with locks listed in bold and bubble players in italics:
QUARTERBACK: Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Greg McElroy, Drew Willy.
Analysis: McElroy playing well enough to lock up next year's No. 2 job.
RUNNING BACK: Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell, Chris Jennings.
Analysis: Their deepest position, no contest.
FULLBACK: John Conner.
Analysis: If something happens to Conner, they'll call Tony Richardson.
WIDE RECEIVER: Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, Derrick Mason, Jeremy Kerley, Logan Payne, Patrick Turner, Scotty McKnight, Mike Campbell, Courtney Smith, Dan DeDPalma.
Analysis: Payne has edge for fifth spot because of special-teams ability.
TIGHT END: Dustin Keller, Matt Mulligan, Jeff Cumberland, Keith Zinger, Josh Baker.
Analysis: Tough call on Cumberland; he makes it because of long-range potential.
OFFENSIVE LINE: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Wayne Hunter, Rob Turner, Vladimir Ducasse, Robby Felix, Matt Kroul, Dennis Landolt, Trevor Canfield, Pete Clifford, Zane Taylor, Nevin McCaskill.
Analysis: Looks like they're going to carry Turner (broken leg) on the 53, hoping he's back in at least two months. Ducasse still on scholarship. Importing a vet definitely a possibility.
DEFENSIVE LINE: Mike DeVito, Sione Pouha, Muhammad Wilkerson, Ropati Pitoitua, Marcus Dixon, Kenrick Ellis, Martin Tevaseu, Jarron Gilbert, Lorenzo Washington.
Analysis: Could end up carrying three nose tackles, Pouha, Ellis and Tevaseu.
LINEBACKER: David Harris, Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Jamaal Westerman, Josh Mauga, Garrett McIntyre, Aaron Maybin, Nick Bellore, Brashton Satele, Eddie Jones, Joey LaRocque and Matthias Berning.
Analysis: Seven battling for the final two or three spots, including Bills former No. 1 Maybin.
SECONDARY: Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith, Kyle Wilson, Brodney Pool, Marquice Cole, Dwight Lowery, Donald Strickland, Emanuel Cook, Byron Landor, Julian Posey, Ellis Lankster, Tracy Wilson.
Analysis: Good competition, with six players chasing the final two or three spots.
SPECIALISTS
Nick Folk (PK), Tanner Purdum (LS), Chris Bryan (P), T.J. Conley (P), Nick Novak (PK).
Analysis: When you get right down to it, the guy with the most job security is Purdum.

Why did he say tough call on Cumberland? Hes been fantastic in preseason and has lots of potential, why wouldn't he make it? Pretty much what I had, except I had Strickland as a lock and Patrick Turner making it over Payne. I also have Satele making it as the 4th ILB and Aaron Maybin making it as the 4th OLB since I think he brings the team something they don't have at the position, speed and Rex will want toms time to see if he can get him to be a situational pass rusher. And I think Robby Felix will make the team as a C/OG.
