Rookie defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson said Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was getting “rowdy” with some other Jets players (specifically safety Emanuel Cook), but nothing directly led to a two-punch fight that got Wilkerson and Jacobs ejected in Monday night’s preseason game.
“I was just pass-rushing and he came up in pass protect, and I ran into him the first time,” Wilkerson said. “The ball was thrown and he approached me, threw a blow at me and that’s what it was.”
Wilkerson said he does not regret what he did.
“Was it a smart move? No. Do I regret it? No,” he said during a conference call Tuesday. “That’s just football and I’m not going to let someone just try and take advantage of me.”
Safety Jim Leonhard saw the play and said the competitive fire is consistent from what the Jets have seen from Wilkerson during camp. In watching the film Tuesday, Leonhard didn’t see anything wrong with what Wilkerson did, suggesting that Jacobs “took offense” to a solid play by Wilkerson.
“You do like to see that — he’s not backing down,” Leonhard said. “He’s going to be an aggressive player for us and we like to see that.”
On Monday, Bart Scott said he wished Jacobs would have been the bigger person, or “wily veteran,” and avoided a fight.
