Immigration officials deported nearly 400,000 illegal immigrants last year - more than half of them with criminal records, according to new data released Tuesday.

The announcement marks the third straight year of record-setting deportation figures for the Obama administration, which has tried to strike a delicate balance on the divisive immigration enforcement issue by touting efforts to target the most dangerous criminals.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials reported removing 396,906 illegal immigrants in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up by about 4,000 from the previous fiscal year. Nearly 55 percent - some 216,698 illegal immigrants - had felony or misdemeanor convictions, officials said, an increase of roughly 89 percent from the 2008 fiscal year.

In Southeast Texas, the number of removals declined slightly from 21,645 in the 2010 fiscal year to 20,450 last year. Roughly 74 percent of those removed had a felony or misdemeanor criminal conviction, officials said.

"Smart and effective immigration enforcement relies on setting priorities for removal and executing on those priorities," said ICE Director John Morton. "These year-end totals indicate that we are making progress."

'Wake of devastation'

Immigrant advocates assailed ICE for the record-setting numbers, while border control advocates accused the agency of trying to enact an administrative amnesty.

"All told, this administration has deported nearly 1.2 million people, leaving a wake of devastation in Latino communities across the nation," said Joanne Lin, legislative counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Amid mounting pressure from immigrant advocates earlier this summer, Obama administration officials announced plans to review 300,000 pending immigration cases and halt the deportations of people deemed to be a "low priority" - those who have lived in the U.S. for years without committing serious crimes.

U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, issued a statement Tuesday accusing the Obama administration of "enacting amnesty through inaction."

"It's disappointing that the Obama administration continues to put illegal immigrants before the American people," Smith said.

1,000 were killers

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., a leading proponent of immigration reform in Congress, said while more criminals are being deported, the U.S. still removes a large number of people who pose no threat and contribute to the economy.

"Nobody can say with a straight face that President Obama is not enforcing our immigration laws vigorously, but that is still the main talking point of the right wing every day of the week and twice on Sunday's talk shows," Gutierrez said.

Federal officials did not provide a comprehensive breakdown of the criminal convictions, but said more than 1,000 people removed nationally last year had homicide convictions. Another 5,800 were sexual offenders, and about 80,000 people were convicted of drug-related crimes or driving under the influence.

That's a record number of deportations under President Obama. Yeah he's just giving them free reign alright. No administration has deported more illegal immigrants than Barack Hussein Obama's administration. Not Bush and not Reagan. Even better most of the illegal immigrants being deported are the hostile, violent types.

I'd like to know how these numbers were recorded. Were these ACTUAL deportations or just deportation orders? If they were only the orders, then they're worthless as most just go and then get asylum on the day they're supposed to leave. Give me PROOF that these were actually deported. You always want proof. So do I. I'd also like to know how much it cost to do it. I guarantee the cost was much more than the cost of an individual bullet for each of them.

Your answer is right there in the article. Did you read it? Now let's stop and think about what will happen if the U.S. does what you think we should do to each illegal immigrant. Let's say we start doing that today. First we would lose any ground to stand on when we try to lecture countries like China and North Korea when it comes to human rights violations. Then if we shot every illegal immigrant that would include illegal immigrants from countries who are our traditional allies. People who stay after their visas expire. People from countries like Canada and Great Britain. Some people from those countries are here illegally too and that would include them in your "let's shot them all" law. The Canadian and British governments would not like that at all. Now some of the illegal immigrants that would be shot in the head would also be from China. China is not a country we can afford to piss off right now. They own a lot of our debt and they have a history of stealing our military secrets. If we attacked their citizens they'd see that as a threat, an act of aggression towards the Chinese people, and might see that as an act of war. They could along with Mexico (and many other nations) would declare war on the U.S. China would then mobilize their large military and put troops and weapons (which possibly could include nuclear weapons) in Mexico.

Meaning the U.S. would have to fight a war on the continental United States for the first time since the Civil War. Iraq, Afghanistan, Desert Storm, Vietnam, Korea, both World Wars, and the Spanish-American war were all fought outside of the continental U.S. But if we shot every illegal immigrant (some of which are from countries we consider allies) we'd be making allies into enemies and further destroying or economy (since we'd be losing trading partners) and making ourselves look like the world's bully. Which would increase the amount of hatred towards the U.S. which would make it harder to stop terrorist attacks against the U.S. We would also be putting American lives overseas at risk. Millions of Americans live, work, and vacation outside of the U.S. If we started killing illegal immigrants from India for example, what's to stop hostile and angry people in India from killing innocent American civilians who are in India? They'd feel if we can kill their citizens (their family & friends), then they can kill our citizens (our family & friends) over there. If we passed a law like you want here, what's to stop another country from passing a law that said they could kill Americans there, just like we'd be doing here? If we're at war with that nation they could say innocent Americans in that nation are spies and they'd kill them. Also if we made a law that says we can kill illegal immigrants, what's to stop us from going even further in the future (if there is a future)? What's to stop us from next making a law that says we can kill LEGAL immigrants to this country. For "population control" reasons. We're not above it, just look at what we did to Japanese-Americans during WWII and the Native Americans since before there even was a United States of America. There are already groups here that want to limit LEGAL immigration to the U.S. I see their ads on cable TV often. Your law would be a slippery slope into making laws killing anybody for any reason.

I didn't know there was another thread. But I'll tell this right now, not all 12 million illegal immigrants want to or try to go to college here. THEY COME HERE TO WORK! The ones that were raised here as Americans are the ones that would benefit from the DREAM act. Not people who are working in the fields from dawn to dusk. So that 76 billion dollar figure is inflated because not all 12 million even want to go to college here or would even qualify for the DREAM act. Read the bill first and then you'd know who it would and wouldn't benefit. I'll tell you one thing, the World War III that would start because of the "let's kill them all" law you want will cost a lot more to the U.S. treasury than 76 billion dollars.
