To qualify for temporary status, migrants had to show they entered the United States before Jan. 1, 1982, and that they had continuously resided since then. They could get permanent residency within 18 months after that if they met certain requirements, such as learning English. The program took effect in 1987, also covering up to 350,000 people who had worked in U.S. agriculture at least 90 days in each of the preceding three years.

Many have called the program a success because it awarded green cards to 2.7-million migrants, giving them the hope of entry to the American middle class.

In exchange for the amnesty, the new law was supposed to have beefed up border patrols and stiffened fines for both the migrant workers and employers in cases of violation. Alas, the law failed to stop illegal immigration, and many critics of the law say the government never thoroughly regulated employers who skirted the law's requirements.

This much is certain: If the law aimed to curb illegal immigration, it failed: When the law was passed, there were about 5-million illegal immigrants; now, there's an estimated 12-million.

When Reagan signed the law, many predicted it would encourage the hiring of more migrants, especially outside of agriculture, and that this would spur the backlash against immigration that we're seeing today.

You said you were giving evidence to debunk that it's easy to get a student visa. You then provided information that this kid was already living here ON A STUDENT VISA. You apparently think a visa gives you permanent residency. Apparently in 27 years you haven't learned how to read or you have no reading comprehension skills. A visa does not grant you permanent residency nor is it meant to be a doorway to permanent residency. Again......hopefully you put down the crack pipe by now so you can understand this......one of the three requirements to obtain a student visa is the EXPECTATION THAT YOU WILL LEAVE. • Intend to depart from the United States upon completion of the course of study; and

Actually douchebag.....I DID read both articles. You cry that some kid's going to get deported because he's going to graduate. Well.....isn't that what he agreed to do upon submitting an application for a student visa? Or can you not read requirement number two out of the three in order to get the student visa? Apparently, I know FAR more than you do about the immigration process than you do. I've already caused peopel to be deported when they applied for the free healthcare insurance through NJFamilycare when I was running their eligibility processing unit. And I'm DAMN proud to have caused them to be deported.

Immigration has been one of the unexpected bright lines dividing the Republican field. Despite his militant approach to stopping the cross-border drug trade, Rick Perry’s no-border-fence stance and support of in-state tuition for illegal immigrant students has made him a target of the rest of the field, most of whom seem to be vying for the most conservative position.

Front-runner Mitt Romney, for example, referred to illegal immigrants as illegal aliens during one of the debates. Herman Cain has advocated building a Great Wall of China-like structure on the border. The candidates all have a similar stance on immigration reform:secure the border first, immigration reform later.

For Latino voters, immigration reform is tied with the economy as the most important issue Latinos think Congress and President Obama should address. Based on a new poll by Latino Decisions, 42 percent of Latinos rank immigration reform and the DREAM Act as the most important issues.

And how are the candidates, who appear out West Monday, faring?

Perry’s support of a Texas-style DREAM Act hasn’t bought him any good will with Latinos—according to the poll, 39 percent have an unfavorable view of him, with 22 percent viewing him favorably. Romney does slightly better, with 28 percent favorable ratings and 26 percent unfavorable. Cain is hardly known by Latinos, according to the poll of 600 Latino voters (52 percent said they had never heard of him, 15 percent had favorable views and 14 percent had unfavorable views). Perry is slightly better known than Cain and Romney.


Most Latinos are still leaning towards Obama, who has begun Hispanic outreach; 64 percent of those polled said they will likely vote for him. But analysts say that support is soft enough to provide an opportunity for Republicans who are interested in wooing Latinos.

“There is an opening if the Republicans change their messaging,” said Matt Barreto, polling director for Latino Decisions. “The problem is that the Latinos don’t know who [the candidates] are, and they aren’t having any positive outreach. They could easily soften their image and their rhetoric and make some inroads, but they are absolutely missing that chance right now.”


Romney also went on to say this in Florida:

I think if you're opposed to illegal immigration it doesn't mean you don't have a heart. It means that you have a heart and a brain."

I completely agree. He hasn't had the experience yet to realize what he is losing due to his position regarding the illegals and what they turly cost us taxpayers in this country. Hopefully someday he will see the light but he is entitled to his opinion. It just would've been nie if he knew how to have a civilized debate.

Questioned this afternoon during two campaign stops in New Hampshire about the use of illegal immigrants on his property, Romney declined to answer. An aide said he would issue a statement, and Romney, emerging from a Concord restaurant, said, "Did you hear him? We'll give you a statement."

Later, the campaign issued a statement saying Romney had just learned -- apparently from Globe reporters -- of the company's continued practice of employing illegal immigrants, and immediately fired it.

"After this same issue arose last year, I gave the company a second chance with very specific conditions," Romney said in the statement. "They were instructed to make sure people working for the company were of legal status. We personally met with the company in order to inform them about the importance of this matter. The owner of the company guaranteed us, in very certain terms, that the company would be in total compliance with the law going forward.

"The company's failure to comply with the law is disappointing and inexcusable, and I believe it is important I take this action," Romney said.

For Romney, who has made curtailing illegal immigration a cornerstone of his presidential campaign, the revelation that he continued to employ the same landscaping company was likely to fuel criticism from his rivals, at least one of whom -- Giuliani -- has already mocked Romney's commitment to the issue on the trail.

Yeah Romney's against illegal immigration alright, except for the ones he paid to work for him. Romney's not going to do anything on the illegal immigration issue if he were president.
