The Jets are in on Peyton Manning. Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan have been given numerous opportunities to state that are not interested in Peyton Manning and they have refused to do so. (most recently on Rich Eisen Podcast last week when Tannenbaum responded that he has a duty to explore all options). This should surprise nobody, especially those that read Ryan's book.
If the Jets are not interested in Manning, it is in their interest to say so. But nobody is willing to come out and say "Sanchez is the starter, the only thing we are looking to upgrade is the backup spot."
At this point, little or no damage has been done. If the Jets do not make any overt overages towards Manning then Sanchez should be able to walk into the locker and lead.
But the Jets played this game last year at Cornerback. After the ridiculous Nnamdi persuit they crawled back to Cromartie. That was not an ideal situation but the results were not devastating. Cromartie and the rest of the team understood that Nnamdi is a special player and everyone was able to move on. But Cornerback and Quarterback are not the same thing.
If we spend next weekend reading about Woody Johnson, Rex Ryan, and Mike Tannenbaum flying to Manning and the following week playing "will they or won't they" then the Mark Sanchez era is over, Manning or not. After an open pursuit of another Quarterback, even Manning, there is just no way that Sanchez can be expected to walk back into that locker room and lead.
I won't give an opinion as whether I think we should get Peyton Manning. But I will say that if we pursue him, we better do so with the understanding that the Sanchez era is over and have a backup plan if Manning goes elsewhere.
Edit: After writing this, I just googled "manning Jets" and found this http://espn.go.com/n....hez-chad-henne
