As expected, Commissioner Roger Goodell has hit the Saints hard for the bounty system that was employed for three seasons.
Per a league source, head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for the full year.
But it could have been worse for Payton. Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely. (Presumably, that means at least a year.)
Also, G.M. Mickey Loomis has been suspended for eight games.
More to come.

Seriously just take away the pads and helmets and give them flags to play with. The Patriots win 3 Super Bowls by cheating and they get a slap on the wrist. The Saints do something that has been a part of the game for years and they get the death penalty? The point of hitting is to make it hurt. It's not supposed to tickle and feel good. Roger Goodell proves once again that he is an imbecile and is the worst thing to ever happen to the NFL. He's completely ruined the game.

I think on appeal Payton may have his ban reduced to half a season. Williams' suspension is up for review at the end of 2012, and his participation is arguably worse than that of Payton. So if Williams is able to come back and coach after a season, Payton will have been received as tough a sentence for a lesser crime.
Still, the length of the bans for all seems over the top. Goodell needs to learn that there is a balance between showing your tough and being completely draconian.
