How impressed is coach Rex Ryan by third-round pick Demario Davis? The Jets coach said today that he sees in Davis some of the leadership qualities that have made Ray Lewis one of the all-time great linebackers.
'I'm not saying demario is that guy, and there's only one Ray Lewis," Ryan said. "But it’s interesting. His face, mannerisms, passion -- I see some things, and it’s interesting."
Ryan knows Lewis' leadership abilities firsthand from his decade coaching in Baltimore. Ryan wasn't with the Ravens for the beginning of Lewis' professional career, but he knows Lewis had a presence the moment he joined the team. He sees that in Davis, and he is excited.
"It's easy to say, 'Well, this guy was a leader for his football team," Ryan said. "But does he have that thing where he can lead men? That’s rare, and some guys have it. Ray Lewis had it when he came in. The day he walked into Baltimore, he was the leader of that defense."
Davis was scouted out of Arkansas State and came to Florham Park for a pre-draft visit. Ryan said the whole building was impressed.
"It’s rare," Ryan said. "I'm not going to say he's the leader Ray Lewis is. But there are some -- even when he talks to you, like, 'Wow, he’s really an impressive person,' and he gets it. He’s a team guy, and he’s not an individual guy. He’s all about the team, and he is all about business."

Not a bad draft when you get the next Julius Peppers, Randy Moss and Ray Lewis in rounds one, two and three...

I doubt we see much of Davis this season other than on special teams. But I trust Rex and Pettine's judgement when it comes to linebackers. It's great to hear that speed is not his only good asset.

lol. i'll take that. BTW i never said coples would be as good as peppers, just that he's the same type of athlete. I also never said dvais would do more then be in on sub packages and special teams. I did say hill will be a top WR in a few years though

Ok Rex lets put some pressure on the kid!! The Ray Lewis!! really???? Think I am starting to get tired of Rex!!! all I see from this defensive guru is the defense going backwards for the last 2 years and not too confident about this year!!!

The defense has gone backwards, yet in 2010 was ranked 3rd(as opposed to 1st in 2009), and 5th last year. So going backwards still resulted in top 5 defenses despite having no real pass rush and some terrible safety play while relegating play call duties to Pettine.

Putting Demario Davis in the same breath as Ray Lewis is silly, but that's Rex trying to talk up his guys.

To be fair, Rex wasn't calling him Ray Lewis. He said there is clearly 1 Ray Lewis, he was just praising the leadership qualities of Davis and said somethings reminded him of Ray with leadership qualities. Reading the scouting report on this guy, it says he has top intangibles and was a team leader. His senior bowl reports said how he was lining guys up in drills and really taking charge of the group.

Remember that other time Ryan said he was bringing in a guy like Lewis? He always thinks all his guys are the next-Ravens' player. Be a f***ing Jet Rex.

Scott was supposed to be his Lewis for the Jets.
