Jets punter T.J. Conley doesn't expect team to bring in competition

Posted ImageFrances Micklow/The Star-LedgerT.J. Conley doesn't expect the team to bring in competition despite having two shanked punts on Saturday. The conversation with special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff wasn't a dreaded one, as originally expected. On Saturday against the Giants, T.J. Conley followed one shanked punt -- a 19-yarder that traveled from the Jets own 18-yard line to their 37-yard line -- with another on the next possession, booting one just 23 yards from the Jets own 12.

But when the two spoke, the notoriously boisterous Westoff was more focused on getting Conley to forget what had happened, and simply correct the mistake. One that Conley said is a pretty easy fix.

"I had the ball outside too far and I was turning (my body) out instead of starting turned out, it was just a technique thing," Conley said. "Easily corrected."

He is the only punter in camp this summer as opposed to last year when he won the position over Chris Bryan. And even with the underwhelming performance on Saturday, Conley expects it to stay that way.

"No, I don't think so," Conley said when asked if he thought the Jets planned on bringing in competition. "But it doesn't matter to be either way. Doesn't matter too much for me."

When asked earlier in the day, Rex Ryan said that Conley was competing against every other punter in the league.

To his credit, Conley still managed to average 41 yards a punt over nine punts -- he joked that it felt like he was back at Idaho where he went to school and averaged 8 1/2 punts per game. He also pinned the Giants on the 1-yard line at the end of the second quarter.

He's looking for the chance to redeem himself against Carolina, so that he can stay the only punter on the roster.

"I prefer it, definitely," he said.

Linebacker Nick Bellore was approached by Rex Ryan about three weeks ago regarding the possibility of him learning the fullback position.

Since, he's attended some after-practice sessions with running backs coach Anthony Lynn and has started absorbing the other side of the playbook.

Today, he had a white practice jersey on like the rest of the offense and worked almost exclusively with the backs. He'll remain with the backs for the rest of the week.

"Any time you learn something new, it's a chance to get on the field more which is great," he said. "I like it a lot. I'm going to get a crash course in it, just try and get my feet wet."

Bellore hasn't been a ballcarrier at any level, but joked that he thinks he can catch and run.

"It's basically like playing linebacker, but you block instead of tackling guys," he said. "There's a lot of carryover with the position."

I'm not worried about the punter at all. For one it was preseason and second if what the NFL Network announcers said is correct he only shanked one punt all last year.I haven't checked this myself but that is what they said.

If he only shanked one punt last year for the world of me I dont know why everyone is on his jock and talking about getting rid of him.
As long as he gets it out of his system and corrected by the regular season then that is all I'm worried about. Who knows what factored into his three shanks. Could've been his shoes, poor footing, soreness, whatever.

Lmao. Agreed.
