The whole concept behind the 3-4, is that the defense doesn't know where the 4th rusher is coming from. When you have a stud OLB, that makes a ton of sense and puts a lot of pressure on the OL. When your best OLB is Calvin Pace? The 3-4 becomes a liability. Not only are we sending 4 guys, but because our 4 guys are not getting there, we often have to send 5 guys... which backfires more often than not as our 5 man rush is still not getting to the QBs.
Looking at our DL, we have 2 guys who can be good 4-3 DEs and defeat one on one matchups (Wilk and Coples). Then we have a bevy of big bodies (DeVito, Ellis, Pouha) that can rotate on the interior. Our LBs at this point don't fit either the 3-4 or the 4-3 but DeMario Davis and Maybin both have the speed to seal the edges. Harris and Scott can rotate in and out and BT and Pace would rotate on the DL as DEs half the time.
I don't think this is suddenly going to transform our front 7 into a terrifying passrush, but what it would do is set the front 7 in a constant mode and put our best players (the DEs) in one on one matchups. The biggest issues I've seen so far on our defense, is that all too many times, OLs get to our LBers so I think that the real difference will be the run defense. Our DL is stout, with an extra body on the line, it will be downright immovable. The LBers will be free to hit the holes and make tackles at the LOS.

Yea we already play a ton of 4 man fronts. Probably 50/50 3-4 4-3.

even when we are in a 3-4 we still have the 4th on the line. He is just standing up. I think the league is just catching up to what Rex likes to do much the they have caught up with the Packers Offense. Bottom line is we need to score more points on a more regular basis.

I trust our DLine players to do whatever is asked of them, I'm more hesitant to trust our LBs and CBs now. Cro should still go up against the guys he matches up well against, but I don't think we are going to view Wilson as a player that should be on the team now that he has to play against starting caliber receivers every week. I'm definitely interested to see who performs and who doesn't on this defense over the next two months.

Exterminate all rational thought, that is the conclusion I have come to
