Jets' Bart Scott out for Sunday's game vs. the Dolphins, ending his streak of 119 consecutive games
Bart Scott's streak of 119 consecutive games played will come to an end Sunday when the inside linebacker sits out the Jets' game against the Miami Dolphins, a person with knowledge of Scott's status confirmed to the Star-Ledger tonight. The person requested not to be identified because the Jets have not made Scott's status public.
Scott has been playing despite a painful hyperextended right big toe, which he suffered in Week 3 in the first game against the Dolphins. The injury, the Jets said, normally carries a 3-4 week recovery time, but Scott has played through it. However, he has been largely ineffective, and against New England last Sunday, he played just nine snaps because he was unable to cut and move around comfortably. He did not practice all week.
On Thursday, Scott told reporters, “I’ve always prided myself on having a high pain tolerance, playing through things, and I just want to show my teammates I’m willing to bite down and continue to play and do what I can do to help us win.”
Scott insisted Thursday that he did not care about playing to preserve his streak.
“I don’t care about a streak,” Scott said. “If helping the team best is for me to be on the sideline, help these young linebackers see what’s going on, then I’ll do that.”
Coach Rex Ryan said having Scott play in four games with the injury could have made it worse.
“There’s always the possibility that he re-aggravated it or something,” Ryan said. “I don’t believe that to be the case, but he’s sore as heck right now, there’s no question about that.”
