Sources: Jets owner Woody Johnson prefers Greg McElroy, but Mike Tannenbaum & Tony Sparano want Mark Sanchez to start v Jaguars

Rex Ryan hasn’t revealed his starting quarterback for this week's game against the Jaguars, but the Daily News has learned that owner Woody Johnson prefers Greg McElroy to start this week. General manager Mike Tannenbaum and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano prefer Mark Sanchez, who was benched for the first time in his career last week and watched as McElroy rallied the Jets to a win over the Cardinals.

Ryan met with various members of the organization on Monday in order to make an informed decision, according to sources. However, he hadn’t definitively decided on his signal caller by the end of the day.

Ryan wasn't given an ultimatum by his bosses to start a particular quarterback. He simply solicited opinions and preferences.

Tim Tebow, who is dealing with two cracked ribs, doesn’t appear to be in the mix to start in Jacksonville.

I was just about to post that.

So teh GM and OC (football guys) want sanchez.
Woody (business guy) wants a 3rd sting 7th round 2nd year player to start who has never done anything yet, over teh guy taht took them to 2 AFC champ games
Rex is conflicted becuase footballwise he knows to go with his OC and the owner could influence him.

Moral of the story, I hope woody doens't start ruinging the team like jerry joned, dan snyder, and al davis all did to theirs

As long as Tebow doesn't start, I'm happy.

The same with the owner. There are good reasons to be made for McElroy starting and decent reasons to begin with Sanchez. But what isn't a good idea is the owner getting involved with such decisions.

There will be multiple scapegoats for this. Tanny won't be back in the same capacity. Cavanaugh will be gone. Rex may survive this because he makes Woody laugh. I think Pettite and Sparano probably won't (because Rex will push them under the bus). I can see a whole new coaching staff next year.

So you believe we should start Sanchez again. Do you really believe he can be the guy to take us to the next level? If you do then you are in the same category as Tannenbaum. That should make you feel good but people like me feel worse. I think Tannenbaum is a great non-football manager. Salary caps and business great. talent evaluator not.

Woody has this right. That kid won a National Championship under pressure. He is very intellgent. So it comes down to his ability to engineer drives. We know Sanchez can't. How do we know that. WE HAVE SEEN IT WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT.

By the way, I'm guessing there were posts sinilar to yours many years ago when someone said how can you start this kid. he is a 6th round draft choice in his second year. They only got him to act as a back up. Seems Tom Brady wasn't too bad. If you think he was the only -Unitas was a 19th round draft choice. Montana third round. Many stars drafted low and many flops drafted high.

McElroy should indeed start and they should give him the same understanding and patience they have shown Sanchez.

What do you mean start? He startED long ago. The league should force him to do one of the following:
1. Make winning goal 1, 2, 3, and 4
2. Sell the team to someone who will take option 1.

The difference is brady sat for like 3-4 years behind drew bledsoe who was an excellent QB at the time and brady worked his a** off to get better. Also for every 1 QB that comes in late and surprises everyone, there are 200 that do exactly what you expect. and thats nothing.

Did you watch McElroy play this preseason? He can't throw a 20 yard pass w/o running and putting his whole body into it lol. It pathetic. He's got a worse noodle then a post injury chad. Brady cna sling one 50 yards from the pocket on a rop w/o an issue. McElroy is smart but he is young and inexpeiranced and physically lacking. He can make a good bacl-up as you can scheme around him with short quick passes, but its just a band aid. He isn't the future of this franchise

He knows how to stop one. He knows what QB don't like to see and what they do.

and even if he is a "defensive" guy i'm sure his 30+ years of football experience makes him more qualified then people watching games every weekend

And Sanchez is? No matter what you say to me or most people reading this string, it's crap. Here is what we know for a fact. Sanchez cannot read defenses and he is in his 4th year. Sanchez is worse today then he was in his rookie year. Sanchez cannot escape the pocket and goes down with a finger tackle. Sanchez cannot reach 50% completion. sanchez throws as many or more picks than TD's. Now - are you arguing any of those facts? In return you want to tell me the kid can't throw a pass 20 yards but takes his college team to the national championship? How do you know he can't? Your arguments are suppositions. You don't know what the kid can do but you know that Sanchez sucks.

You're right about Brady - he sat behind Bledsoe because Bledsoe could play the game. Sanchez can't. All they do is waste time trying to protect their jobs hoping he can turn things around. he can't. It isn't that he doesn't work hard. He does. He just doesn't have the talent necessary upstairs to make his arm and legs work downstairs.

u mad bro? Seiously alot of anger in your post for no reason.

If you want to blindly believe McElroy is the savoir , go for it. But we've seen this before with brooks bollinger (he had a few good games) and kellen clemens, etc etc. The last time we had a good young QB was chad but he was cursed with the injury bug. had he stayed healthy he would have been a hell of a QB for us.

McElroy isn't the asnwer. it doens't mean i think sanchez is but sadly sanchez is the best QB we have on the roster. tebow is terrible and mcelroy isn't any better. You loud mcelroy for winning in college, so did sanchez, so did vince young and he was a top 3 pick in the NFL, so did tebow. Tebow even won a playoff game as a rookie QB, doens't mean he is good. I'd rather see tebow then McEroy.

Iin other words mark is the lesser of the 3 evils we have at QB right now. but keep hopin for McElroy to save us, but its never gonna happen

McElroy has thrown the ball 7 times in the regular season but you already know Sanchez is better?

No anger in my response - sorry if you took it that way. Exasperation maybe. I am always amazed at people who know something when there is no way they can know it. To begin with, Sanchez played 1 year in college and didn't win a championship. In fact, you should go online to Wikipedia and read about his college career. It is enlightening.

Then to be so sure that McElroy isn't the answer amazes me. I didn't say he was. I said he should be given the opportunity because we know Sanchez isn't. You seem to believe that Sanchez is the best of the three and should therefore play. But Tebow played 10 games last year and while he looks dorky, brought the Broncos to the playoffs and beat Pittsburgh. That's something that Sanchez has not been able to do.

I look at the game differently. To me its about winning and putting the proper player in the position. I know Sanchez is terrible. I know Tebow has terrible mechanics but seems to win. I know McElroy has won wherever he has gone and might very well be our best option. But I don't have a job to protect like Tanny and Ryan. I just call it as I see it. You are trying to make a case for a QB that has been given more chances and more patience than possibly any QB I have ever seen and he sucks. Why keep lobbying for him? I don't get it.

Exactly. i mean he didn't throw the ball over 2 yards. I watched him all preseason. his arm is too weak to be effective. especially in winter with the high winds.
