Pete Carroll: Braylon Edwards was cut because of hamstring injury

Jets fans expecting to see the Braylon Edwards of old may want to temper their excitement.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that the Seahawks released the recently signed Jet because they believed Edwards would be sidelined for a while with a hamstring injury.

"We thought he had a three-week injury or so and it was going to be a while before he was back and we weren't sure if he would make it back," Carroll said during a news conference. "So we didn't know."

The Seahawks cut the receiver last week with a waived/injured designation, meaning he didn't pass their exit physical, and then waived him from injured reserve on Monday. The Jets -- the only team to put in a claim for Edwards -- were awarded the 29-year-old wideout the next day.

The Jets made the move in hopes of shoring up their depleted wide receiving corps. But a lingering hamstring injury raises questions about his ability to contribute.

"I'm hoping he's well," Carroll said. "He's going to be right at the cusp of getting back from what we understand with his hammy. He'll be a good player for them. He's a good football player. Hopefully he can get back and get well."

The Jets have just two healthy wide receivers, Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens, along with backup tight end Jeff Cumberland. Rookie receiver Stephen Hill sprained the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee Sunday against the Jaguars, starting tight end Dustin Keller is nursing an ankle injury, and receiver Clyde Gates still is sidelined with a concussion. The Jets released backup running back Kahlil Bell Tuesday morning to create roster space for Edwards, who helped lead the team to back-to-back AFC championship games in 2009 and 2010.

He caught 88 passes for 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns in 28 games during his time under Rex Ryan, but the Jets chose not to re-sign him after the 2010 season.

Edwards' production has dropped significantly since leaving the Jets. Slowed by a knee injury, he had 23 receptions for 255 yards and one TD in 19 games with the 49ers and Seahawks. Seattle's decision to use the waived/injured designation status last week (shortly after his Twitter bombshell in which he called Jets management "idiots") indicates he didn't pass the Seahawks' exit physical, so he comes with a buyer-beware label.

The Jets approached Seattle about trading for Edwards long before the Week 8 trade deadline, according to a CBS Sports report. The Seahawks, however, weren't interested in pursuing a deal.

But the Jets found a way to reunite.

An eager Edwards tweeted his excitement about his return Tuesday, posting a photo of himself in a Jets T-shirt.

"Back in the right colors," he wrote.

@RichCimini Braylon Edwards was "real limited" in practice yesterday, per Ryan. Today, he's stretching with rehab group. Not a good sign. #Jets

And him being injured shouldn't surprise anyone. Had a knee surgery, has been struggling as a receiver, reportedly suffering from current knee problems, and now listed as having hamstring problems.

I wouldn't be surprised if we signed a guy who doesn't play this season. I guess we shall see If He doesn't play Tanny needs to be lynched.
