Bill Hughan, the Jets' head strength-and-conditioning coach, has been fired after two seasons in his current position, a league source told ESPN Insider Adam Schefter.

Injuries, particularly of the soft-tissue variety, were an ongoing theme, dating to last spring's minicamp and OTA practices. The issue carried into training camp, hitting the receiving corps in particular. Rex Ryan was exasperated, to the point where he tweaked the practice schedule to allow for more stretching time.

The Jets were crushed by injuries in 2012, losing two of their best players -- Darrelle Revis (knee) and Santonio Holmes (foot), both of whom suffered non-contact injuries.

All told, the Jets' starters had 54 games-lost due to injuries. The team's injury rate for the entire roster was the highest since 2005, according to the Jets' in-house statistics. Former GM Mike Tannenbaum said recently the team was planning to conduct an internal study on the problem in the offseason.

Hughan was hired in 2011. He replaced Sal Alosi, who resigned under pressure after his infamous tripping incident in December 2010.

Injuries happens. Did he have anything to do with Holmes planting his foot and mess up his knee. Firing a strenght conditioner guy is always a copout. He's not the reason we stink this year

Game injuries withstanding, these guys should be ready to go. The team was wrecked with injuries and as the article states, soft tissue injuries should be no excuse. The conditioning should be there and it should happen over the off season and training camp. Regardless after an injury filled and overall terrible season, heads are going to roll and this guy had to pay with his job unfortunately. Is his replacement the Jets savior? No, but it may help. This team needs a reboot from all levels.
