Source: NY Jets assistant coach Bob Sutton to be named Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator
It looks like Rex Ryan may have another opening on his coaching staff.
The Daily News reported in Friday's paper that the Chiefs had requested permission to interview Jets' assistant head coach/linebacker Bob Sutton.
On Friday morning, the News reported on Twitter that Sutton will be Andy Reid's new defensive coordinator, according to a source.
Sutton would be the latest member of Ryan's staff not to return for the 2013 season. The Jets have lost their offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, quarterbacks coach, linebackers coach, outside linebackers coach and assistant defensive backs coach through firings, defections or retirement.
Sutton interviewed for the job earlier this week, a source told The News.
This could pave the way for a Ryan brothers reunion. The News has learned that Rob Ryan, who was fired as the Cowboys defensive coordinator this week, prefers to find a defensive coordinator job in the league. If he can't find a defensive coordinator job, it's possible that Rob could join Rex with the Jets.
On Tuesday, the News reported that Rex Ryan would promote defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman to replace Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator. If Rob Ryan ultimately lands with the Jets, it's likely that Thurman would still be the defensive coordinator with Rob providing another veteran voice on the staff.
Rob Ryan's brash and bold persona would be an intriguing addition to a team that already consistently makes headlines.
