Sunday's AFC Championship Game loss to the Baltimore Ravens has brought out the worst in a handful of New England Patriots fans.

Torrey Smith claims he was the subject of angry tweets from Patriots supporters taunting the Ravens wideout for the death of his younger brother. Tevin Jones passed away after a motorcycle accident in September, an event that united Baltimore's locker room.

"Played a lot of games since my brothers death and I never received as many rude tweets after a win than Sunday...yet NE fans cry about class," Smith tweeted Tuesday.

Patriots fans were up in arms over comments by Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs, who shredded New England after the game.

"These are the most arrogant (expletive) in the world," Suggs said.

Twitter can be a comfortable home to classless, vapid behavior. It's better to expect the worst, but anyone going after Smith for the death of a family member has outdone Suggs by a country mile.

The fierce rivalry between these two teams is one of the best in the NFL. Some of the antics surrounding the game itself we could do without

I've read enough appalling shit by a few of you keyboard warriors on this board (primarily this season-and you know who you are) that nothing shocks me about things people say over the anonymous world of the internet

It's sad that ppl say stuff like that as a result of a game. Patsie fans, despite their successes over the last decade are a pretty frustrated bunch- guess it comes from being spoiled. They prolly take their cue from Belicheat- No. 1 classless jerk. Crybaby when he loses- don't wanna even face the media. Well sucks to be you Billy boy.

Fan behaviour at stadiums can be equally pathetic and irrational too. It makes me laugh how adults who perform respectable jobs five days a week can turn into monsters at the weekends because of a referee's whistle or the quality of a player on the opposite team to that which you're supporting.
Twitter just makes things ten times worse though.

Boston sports fans are the worst in America. I've heard and read both Michael Wilbon and David Aldridge talk about some of the hateful and disgusting things they've heard from Celtics fans in the Boston Garden back in the 1980s during the Lakers-Celtics rivalry. We saw just last month before the Sunday night game between the Patriots and 49ers the disgusting things Patriots fans (and a few 49ers fans) said on Twitter because NBC interrupted the first quarter of the game to show President Obama's speech during the Newtown memorial service. Then last year Bruins fans took to Twitter to voice their unhappiness after losing in the playoffs.

Quote

Pioneers of racial tolerance in sports, the Boston Bruins in 1958 became the first National Hockey League team to sign an African-American player, making Willie O’Ree the Jackie Robinson of hockey.

Yet they found themselves Thursday addressing hateful racist commentary circulated by Bruins fans and others on social media after Joel Ward, a black forward for the Washington Capitals, scored the winning goal in overtime of Game 7 in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs Wednesday at TD Garden.

In an episode that has renewed the conversation about racism in sports and society, the Bruins had barely finished shaking Ward’s hand and saluting their fans from the Garden ice after the game when Ward was targeted with scores of racist posts on Twitter.

The Bruins, Capitals, and NHL immediately condemned the commentary, but the damage was done, as media outlets across the country once again raised questions about Boston’s turbulent racial history, although it was unclear how many of the comments actually came from Boston.

“This kind of emotional and ugly response to a very unfortunate loss rekindles the discussion about what we need to go through, healing the racial divide in America,’’ said Harvard Law professor Charles Ogletree, director of the school’s institute for race and justice. “If we don’t deal with this, we’re going to have a hard time moving forward.’’

Ward generally downplayed the racial slurs, telling USA Today they were “shocking to see, but it didn’t ruin my day.’’

“It didn’t faze me at all,’’ Ward said. “We won, and we are moving on.’’

But Anson Carter, who is black and played for the Bruins from 1996 to 2000, was less forgiving after he also came under attack. When Carter tweeted, “Warrrrrrrrrrrdo!!’’ immediately after the winning goal, a Bruins fan directed a vulgar, racially charged tweet at him, prompting Carter to track down the tweeter and file a complaint with his school, Eastern Connecticut State University.

Carter said he was shocked by the episode, particularly because he recalls only fond memories of Boston.

“When I was traded there, my parents were worried,’’ he recalled. “I remember them saying, ‘Are you sure you’re going to be OK? Shouldn’t you get out of there?’ But my experience in Boston was awesome. Everyone was tremendous.’’

Then came Wednesday’s tweet. On Thursday, Carter heard from Eastern Connecticut’s vice president of student affairs, then received an apology from the tweeter.

“I told him, ‘Don’t think you can hide behind your computer and say that to someone,’ ’’ Carter said. “Don’t act a certain way just because you can’t see my face, because you wouldn’t say that to me in person.’’

The entire episode, Carter said, is “a reminder that racism still exists.’’

“It’s a learned behavior that may take generations to overcome,’’ he said. “But just because one ignorant person made this comment to me, I’m not going to judge every Bruins fan the same way.’’

In some ways, Boston’s national reputation is still tainted by the city’s racial unrest of the 1970s, when court-ordered school desegregation pitted white and black communities against one another. The most memorable images include a group of whites, including a man wielding an American flag, attacking a young black lawyer, Ted Landsmark, on City Hall Plaza and a group of blacks fatally stoning and beating a white auto mechanic, Richard Poleet, after pulling him from his car at a red light in Roxbury.

O’Ree’s early days in the NHL were rife with racism, recalls Bryant McBride, who became the highest ranking black executive in the NHL as vice president of business development in the 1990s. He hired O’Ree to help the league diversify the game and became a close friend.

“Without getting into all the gory details, Willie told me stories about the racially motivated things that happened to him when he began playing in the NHL,’’ McBride said. “He heard racist comments on the ice, and he told me about needing police protection to get in and out of buildings.’’

McBride said he considered those incidents part of the painful legacy of pursuing racial equality in sports.

“I used to categorize those things as products of days gone by,’’ he said. “Now I’m thinking, maybe those days aren’t gone.’’

O’Ree, who is now 76 and lives in California, declined through an NHL spokesman to be interviewed.

More than two dozen players of color appeared this season on NHL rosters, thanks in part to O’Ree’s work with the league.

In Ward’s case, he was born to a working-class couple in Toronto - his parents immigrated to Canada from Barbados - and played many years of junior and minor league hockey, as well as four years at the University of Prince Edward Island, before he reached the NHL in 2006. His series-winning goal was his first of the playoffs.

The racist Twitter comments directed at Ward were reminiscent of an incident in September, when a spectator in London, Ontario, threw a banana at Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, who is black.

In the latest episode, the hateful tweets became so rampant that even Aaron Ward, a former Bruins defenseman who is white, came under fire. He said two of his Twitter followers, believing he was Joel Ward, attacked him in angry tweets that included the “N bomb.’’

Ward said he replied to each by writing, “Not only are you ignorant and classless, but you’re also an idiot.’’

The Bruins struck a similar theme in their official response to the ugliness. In a statement, the organization said, “The Bruins are very disappointed by the racist comments that were made following the game last night. These classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization.’’

The NHL decried the comments as “ignorant and unacceptable’’ and said the individuals responsible “have no place associating themselves with our game.’’

In Washington, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said: “What these people have said and done is unforgivable. I hope they are now publicly identified and pay a huge price for their beliefs.’’

Many of the offensive Twitter pages were removed Thursday. Executives at Twitter did not respond to a request for comment. The company’s official rules prohibit the use of obscene or pornographic images but do not explicitly forbid racist commentary.

Ward’s triumphant goal was especially crushing for Bruins fans who expected the team to fare better in defending their Stanley Cup title. Goalie Tim Thomas graciously tapped Ward on the chest in the handshake line and was seen encouraging fans to smile before he left the ice - a sharp contrast to the Bruins loyalists who resorted to digital hate speech.

“It shows us that racism is alive and well, and that we need to spend a lot more time talking about diversity and inclusion,’’ said Dan Lebowitz, executive director of the Center for Sport in Society at Northeastern University.

The most heartening news, said William Smith, founding director of the National Center for Race Amity at Wheelock College, was the number of Twitter users who expressed support for Ward since the initial burst of racism.

“That’s the true tradition of Boston,’’ Smith said. “It makes me hopeful for the city.’’

Philly and New York fans are known for being rough but Boston fans take it to another level. That's why I'm always happy to see them lose more than any other fanbase in the country.

And still doesn't make it newsworthy other than some reporter trying to make a group of fans sound ignorant because a few did something to some spoiled rich football player.

It doesn't matter if he's "spoiled and rich" or selfless and poor, he still doesn't deserve to have even one moron go to his Twitter page and make fun of his brother's death. It's a good thing that this is being reported in the news. This way it puts a spotlight on the fools that wrote those stupid tweets and will hopefully make others in the future think twice before they post shit like that themselves for the world to see. Torrey Smith and the media are not to blame here.

It isn't the reporter making the fans sound ignorant. It's those fans' own words that make them sound ignorant. Something that could have been avoided if they would've just used their brains before they pushed the post button.

Just like all football players are "spoiled" and "rich" or is it just Torrey Smith? We all make generalizations but it would be one thing if this was just an isolated incident. But they definitely have a culture up there that makes them take their team's loses harder than the average fan. I mean from racist comments that used to come out of the Boston Garden in the 80s to the racist comments that that Capitals player got on Twitter from Bruins fans last year. MANY (NOT ALL) but many of their fans have no problem being classless. I mean forget racist comments that happens from time to time everywhere. But in this Torrey Smith situation MORE THAN ONE Patriots fan went after him by using his dead brother...his dead brother man. That's beyond low. It would be one thing if they said those awful things on message board like this or their own Facebook wall. But they went and sought out Torrey Smith's own Twitter page. They wanted to make sure Smith saw their heartless comments regarding his dead brother. There is no excuse for that. At least the Bruins disavowed those racists comments from their fans. I haven't heard the Patriots organization disavow their fans' behavior toward Smith. And it's not just their fans, look at the way Belichick acts after a loss. Then look at Wes Welker's wife's comments towards Ray Lewis after the loss. Really? A player's wife can't even show any class. Have you seen any of the Jets' significant others take to social media to attack another player after a loss? Hell Brady's wife did it to Welker less than a year ago. No they definitely have a culture up there that makes a good number of them act like not just sore losers, but like complete assholes when their team loses. There is no defense for that.

Did any of our players or coaches or fans act like that after the Jets lost to the Colts and Steelers in the 2009 and 2010 AFC Championship games? I don't remember any of us attacking Colts and Steelers players personally.

I don't like what these fans say. I don't like hearing about how great a guy Ray Lewis is when he is a f***ing bad person who says the words "team" and "god" a lot so I'm supposed to pretend he is. I don't like that because the patriots beat the Jets I have to read about how their players and fans are mean, but I guess I shouldn't lump you into a group of idiot Jets fans.

Everyone makes generalizations which is why this whole article is BS and this discussion is BS. Drunk fans talk shit and his feelings were hurt for five minutes until a Niners fan caller Ed Reed a pussy and the whole team got hyped up for something else. Story done, lock the thread.

And Leon Washington's wife can't keep the Jets' name off her twitter page so I guess the Jets and Seahawks are classless organization, depending how you need to spin it of course.

And also I have to read about the classless actions of the Patriots but if Rex Ryan flips off cameras, tattoos players on his body and cries everytime things don't live up to his fantasy then I'm told nothing matters but what happens on the field. Talking about a double standard.

Well if you don't like reading about how Jets fans complain about Patriots fans being "mean" then why did you click on this thread, read this thread (more than once), and reply in this thread (more than once)? Why even participate in this discussion if it is all b.s.?

Has she attacked a Jets player by using his dead brother? After Woody Johnson's daughter died did she use her death to make heartless comments for Woody to see? That might've been a good way to get back at the Jets organization for letting Leon go. There's a difference between holding a grudge and being classless.

I KNOW you are not comparing flipping the bird, tattoos of a half naked woman in a Sanchez jersey, or numerous stupid comments to a person actually going to a player's Twitter page and using that player's brother's death to take a shot at that player after that player's team beats the team you're a fan of. There is no comparison between the two.

There are a few things I have realized about Mr. Jet over a few topics.

1) He is a racist. By constantly using race as a battling tool.
2) He is an extreme Liberal. If you are on either extreme you are probabaly more wrong than right.
3) He is one of those people who will never admit fault, error or defeat.
4)His life sucks and he takes it out on people who don't share in his views.

1-So it is okay for a wife to be a bitch if she thinks she has a reason but not if she is just being bitchy? "Then look at Wes Welker's wife's comments towards Ray Lewis after the loss. Really? A player's wife can't even show any class. Have you seen any of the Jets' significant others take to social media to attack another player after a loss?"
2-I'm comparing what he does to what Belichick does and people whine and cry about like you did when you said, " look at the way Belichick acts after a loss." That has nothing to do with insulting a player or his dead brother.

What's funny is how you try to act like you don't say shit when you just posted it. You can't spin yourself out of stuff when I can copy and paste you being a hypocrite.

For this to be a b.s. topic you sure do have a lot of interest in this b.s. topic.

1. Do you even know what Welker's wife said or do you not know and you're just posting to bitch about this topic and to bitch about me "spinning?" Want to complain about the length of my posts again while you're at it? Read what she wrote then come back and tell me it was necessary for Welker's wife to say that on social media.

2. Rex Ryan first of all doesn't have anything to do with this. If you want to make another thread to bitch and moan about Rex Ryan please go right ahead. But what Rex Ryan does or doesn't do doesn't give Belicheat an excuse to act classless when he's supposed to be one of the most revered coaches of this era. The Patriots are supposed to be known as one of the NFL's model franchises. The "Patriot way" is supposed to be the right way, or so I've been told. So Rex Ryan may be the worst person since Stalin. That's still no excuse for Belicheat to be a dick after he losses a game. We've seen him talk to reporters outside of the locker room after losses before. He could've done it again last Sunday.

Wow......Ray Lewis is a "f***ing bad person" now? Why? Because in 2000, a couple of morons decided to play street thug & ended up dead because of it? Good for them. A couple less scumbags on the planet. Obviously, the prosecutors disagree with your assessment that he's a murderer. One of the douchebags that ended up dead, Jacinth Baker, hit Lewis' co-defendant over the head with a Moet bottle after trying to apparently hold them up in a dark alley. Both of Lewis' co-defendants were both acquitted on the charges & Lewis plead to an obstruction charge for lying to the police.

As for Leon Washington's wife........she's nothing but a gold digging little tramp to begin with. Leon was fine with the organization & its decision to trade him. She's the one that couldn't resist running her mouth nonstop crying she....not Leon, but SHE wanted more money. Leon was damaged goods so the team moved on after helping him rehab.

As for your comparison of Rex flipping off fans in Miami & getting tattoos with the Gaytriot fans, there is no comparison & no. Its not a double standard. If you remember, the dip$hit that took the picture was talking $hit to Rex about the Jets so Rex flipped him off DEFENDING his team. The Gaytriots not only attack their opponents but they're so inept, they attack each other when they lose & so do their hooker wives. No matter what, you do NOT cross the line & talk smack about somebody's dead brother. That's BELOW classless.
I will not be forgotten. This is my time to shine. I've got the scars to prove it. Only the strong survive.

When someone annoys u, it takes 42 muscles in ur face 2 frown. BUT, it only takes 4 muscles 2 extend ur arm & b!tch-slap that mother@*?!&! upside the head!!

While this is bad and we all hate the Patriots.... saying that they are the worst fans in the league for the actions of a few is way off base. There are piece of shit fans of every team. Knowing who the worst fans are in the league is impossible.

Put it this way, there have been multiple times fans have of other teams have been in stabbings over games and it wasn't the Patriots so automatically naming them the worst because we hate the team is stupid. A stabbing is worse than any type of words.

Also during the Jets AFC Championship game against Denver some of the Jets players wives had beer bottles or beer can thrown at their heads. It was a long time a go so I'm not trying to search forever for an article but I remember it happening.

Jets fans themselves have no room to talk after all the media of heckling at Giants stadium.

Yeah we have no right naming another teams fans the most classless in the NFL. There are idiots everywhere.
