Sources: Jets part ways with outspoken offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo
The Daily News has learned that offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo is the latest casualty in Rex Ryan’s coaching shakeup. DeGuglielmo, who made headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2012, is out after only one season with the team, according to sources.
Ryan’s plan is to move over tight ends coach Mike Devlin to replace DeGuglielmo, according to sources.
DeGuglielmo came over from the Dolphins when Tony Sparano was hired as the offensive coordinator last year.
Now, both are gone.
DeGuglielmo’s unprofessionalism and outrageous claims were on display a few times during the season.
Here are his greatest hits:
1) Deguglielmo said he wasn’t worried about the “ghosts of Bill Callahan” in his first encounter with the media. Then, he called Callahan to apologize for his remarks, according to sources.
2) He backed journeyman right tackle Wayne Hunter in that same press conference with this gem: “I’ll be honest with you: This guy is the starting right tackle. Until they tell me otherwise, until they ship him out of this building or until they shoot me dead in my office, that son of a gun is going to be the starting right tackle and he’s going to play well.”
The Jets later traded Hunter to the Rams in the preseason.
3) He threatened to spit out tobacco juice at the feet of several members of the media during a 5-minute media session at training camp.
4) He suggested that reporters should have come to the team facility during SuperStorm Sandy to speak to him. (NFL media policy requires assistants to speak during the team’s bye week, but the team pushed back those sessions since the storm occurred during the bye).
DeGuglielmo is the tenth coach to be gone through firings, defection or retirement since the season ended. Ryan confirmed to reporters on Thursday that he has hired Marty Mornhinweg (OC), Tom McDonald (DBs), elevated Dennis Thurman (DC) and promoted Brian Smith to assistant DBs coach.
