NY Jets ready to cut

It seems the Jets can’t wait to say goodbye to Bart Scott.
Sources told the Daily News Thursday that Gang Green’s plan is to cut the loquacious linebacker, along with Calvin Pace — another mainstay of the linebacking corps — and offensive tackle Jason Smith in the coming weeks before free agency begins March 12. The moves would save the Jets $27.7 million in cap space for next season.
Scott has been the face and mouth of the Jets defense since 2009, and Gang Green would save $7.2 million if he is released. Pace, a Jet since 2008 and in the final year of his contract, would represent $8.6 million in cap savings, and Smith would save the team $12 million, bringing Gang Green under the expected 2013 cap of $121.1 million.
In addition, the Jets will carry over $3.4 million of unused cap space from the 2012 season on top of the expected $121.1 figure.
Much has been made of the Jets’ difficult salary-cap situation. The damage left by former general manager Mike Tannenbaum undoubtedly put the Jets in a poor situation but not an unfixable one — these expected cuts would alleviate much of the cap pressure that new GM John Idzik faces.
Scott signed a six-year, $48 million deal in February of 2009 to follow Rex Ryan, his defensive coordinator in Baltimore, to the Jets. Scott may be remembered by Jets fans more for his fiery personality than his play.
The inside linebacker personified the Jets’ playoff runs in 2010-11 with his “can’t wait” comment on national television following Gang Green’s stunning 28-21 playoff victory over the Patriots, but also had his fair share of gaffes, too.
Following the Jets’ disappointing 2011 season, Scott refused to talk to the media, then flipped off photographers, saying, “Get that out of my f------ face,” for which he earned a $10,000 fine from the league.

Scott’s war with the media continued last season when he threatened Dan Leberfeld of Jets Confidential during an open locker-room session in September. The reporter had tried to snap a photo of Scott — who had recently declared a media boycott — as he was leaving the locker room while the linebacker was talking with another reporter. “I’ll smack the s--- out of you,” Scott yelled at him. “And I’m going to sue you,” Leberfeld fired back. Jets media relations director Bruce Speight and another member of the PR staff had to separate the two.
Then, this past Thanksgiving night, after the Jets were pummeled by the Pats, Scott ripped fans who had heckled the team at halftime.
“At the end of the day, if you made it to be able to put an NFL uniform on, then you are one of the best athletes in the world,” Scott told The News. “The person yelling at you probably was picked last in dodge ball all through high school.
“So do you care about the opinion of them? No.”
Scott averaged 74.8 tackles per year (54 solo) in his four seasons with the Jets, but he had only 60 total tackles (36 solo) this past season.
Though both linebackers are 32, Scott is approaching the twilight of his career while Pace is still a useful commodity — just not at his current price tag. For Pace, there will likely be other suitors willing to offer more than the Jets, who are strapped due to their cap situation.
The changing of the guard at linebacker means 2012 third-round pick DeMario Davis will replace Scott, pairing up with David Harris at inside linebacker.
The Jets may look to replace Pace via the draft. One can certainly imagine the Jets filling the hole at outside linebacker with their first-round pick (No. 9). However, that would mean the Jets will have drafted a defensive player with their first pick for the fourth straight season, and there are plenty of other areas that need to be addressed.
NEW LB COACH: The Jets hired Brian VanGorder as linebackers coach. VanGorder was the Falcons’ defensive coordinator from 2008-2011 and Auburn’s defensive coordinator last season. He replaces Bob Sutton, who left to become the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator. Also, the Jets confirmed a Daily News report that Bobby April III has been hired as a quality control coach for defense, a position he has held with the Eagles for the past two seasons.

The team could also save another 4.75 million by converting Holmes guaranteed money into a bonus, and another just about 7 million by cutting Eric Smith & Pouha.

Total savings are just about 29 million by the 5 cuts & converting Holmes money. Eat the just under 1.5 million by trading Revis & save more than 15 million in 2014.
