The owners love him. He's not going anywhere.
This is a brilliant move from the league's perspective. It gives them a prime "event" each month leading up to training camps. The NFL isn't scared of the NBA Playoffs, and whether you think that's pompous or stupid, they probably shouldn't be. Unless your team is playing that night, the vast majority of fans will dedicate three hours to watch the NFL draft as opposed to an NBA playoff game. Hell, even if your team is playing that night, fans still will probably watch at least some of the NFL draft.
Apparently the PLPA is strongly against delaying free agency, so it may be moot.

The NBA is a bigger brand than the NFL. I think more likely is that people are going to watch playoffs games and switch to NFL in time to see their team pick. If I have a choice between watching a quarter of NBA playoff action or seeing what Jacksonville, Cleveland and Seattle do in the draft, I'm picking NBA. Remember, the draft isn't an action event. You can see all the picks on the ticker. It's not like if you miss the moment the Seahawks draft a DL you're going to be kicking yourself forever.

I think you're underestimating the NFL brand in the US. Sure, the NBA is a bigger brand in the sense that basketball is a more global sport. But, for the casual fan, I'd be willing to bet they'd take the NFL Draft over a first round game between the Spurs and Warriors.
