NFL sets 2013 salary cap at $123M, up from $120.6M
NFL teams such as the Dallas Cowboys have been working feverishly to get under the salary-cap limit by the start of the new league year on March 12.
The good news is most teams will have more wiggle room than expected. The NFL announced to all 32 teams that the salary cap will jump from $120.6 million last year to $123 million in 2013, sources tell NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. There also is a per team minimum salary benefit of $900,000, setting total player compensation at $123.9M per team.
While the Cowboys and Washington Redskins are dealing with a cap penalty, other teams will have extra space carried over from last year.
The extra $2.4 million isn't going to make the difference in landing a high-profile free agent, but it will help teams in assigning restricted free-agent tenders and locking up draft picks later this offseason.
The Assocated Press reported the salary cap increase is a result of greater-than-expected revenues last season -- primarily from NFL Properties -- and a jump in projected league revenues, according to a NFL Players Association official.
The league and the union work together to establish a cap number, based on parameters established under their collective bargaining agreement. The current 10-year CBA was signed in August 2011, ending the owners' lockout of the players.
