The New York Daily News hints the hangup in talks between the Dolphins and free agent Dustin Keller is Miami's unwillingness to offer a multi-year deal.

And why would they, in a market where even top free agents are struggling to breach the $10 million barrier in guaranteed money? Keller is the best remaining tight end, by far, but coming off an injury-plagued campaign where he caught just 28 passes. The longer Keller holds out, the worse his offers may get. Mar 14 - 7:47 PM

1 year deal? WTF??

Miami Dolphins sign tight end Dustin Keller

The Dolphins have agreed to a one-year deal with tight end Dustin Keller, The Miami Herald has learned.

Keller’s brother, Damien, broke the news on Twitter.

He wrote: “What up DOLPHINS! Welcome the Kellers to Miami please! #phins”

Keller visited with the team Wednesday night and most of Thursday before leaving without a deal. He was said to have been unhappy with a one-year offer, but ultimately agreed to those terms. He will be paid $4.5 million in 2013, ESPN reported, and will presumably replace Anthony Fasano in the starting lineup.

Keller, 29 in September, has 241 catches in the 72 NFL games he’s played the past five seasons. He was the New York Jets’ first-round draft pick in 2008.

He appeared in just eight games in 2012 due to persistent hamstring and ankle injuries, but hadn’t missed a game in his career before then. Keller has averaged more than 11 yards per catch in every season he’s played.

Meanwhile, the Jake Long watch moved into Day 3 in St. Louis, as Long mulls whether to stay with the Dolphins or sign with the Rams.

Late Thursday night his wife Jackie gave up an update on Twitter:

“I know you guys want answers right now, we do too! It’s all going to work out for the best and we’ll let you know when we know!”

She added: “Believe me, if I had an answer you guys would know.”

Locally, the Dolphins will also spend Friday wooing Brandon Gibson, a free agent receiver last with St. Louis who arrived in town Thursday. There’s a sense of optimism he won’t leave Miami without a deal. Linebacker Thomas Howard and offensive lineman Lance Louis, both visitors at Dolphins camp Thursday, deserve attention too.

Elsewhere, Dolphins corner R.J. Stanford signed his exclusive rights tender contract Friday, his agent announced on Twitter.

I think it was funny that Keller was saying how he didn't want to get tagged but took a 1 year deal for considerably less than what the tagged salary would have been

I don't understand the strategy here. We let another one of Sanchez's favorite targets walk? We couldn't match a 1 year deal from the Fins? Are we just going to tank this season?

Looks like the team is definitely heading for a higher draft pick in 2014. My prediction of 5-6 wins may end up being generous. Letting go of a guy who is a damn near perfect fit for the WCO and was the team's leading receiver every year but 2012 just doesn't seem wise.

We also can't keep wanting to push money into future years because we'll need to re-visit David Harris' deal again after the 2013 season as he's only signed through 2014.
I will not be forgotten. This is my time to shine. I've got the scars to prove it. Only the strong survive.
