The Dolphins have agreed to a one-year deal with tight end Dustin Keller, The Miami Herald has learned.
Keller’s brother, Damien, broke the news on Twitter.
He wrote: “What up DOLPHINS! Welcome the Kellers to Miami please! #phins”
Keller visited with the team Wednesday night and most of Thursday before leaving without a deal. He was said to have been unhappy with a one-year offer, but ultimately agreed to those terms. He will be paid $4.5 million in 2013, ESPN reported, and will presumably replace Anthony Fasano in the starting lineup.
Keller, 29 in September, has 241 catches in the 72 NFL games he’s played the past five seasons. He was the New York Jets’ first-round draft pick in 2008.
He appeared in just eight games in 2012 due to persistent hamstring and ankle injuries, but hadn’t missed a game in his career before then. Keller has averaged more than 11 yards per catch in every season he’s played.
Meanwhile, the Jake Long watch moved into Day 3 in St. Louis, as Long mulls whether to stay with the Dolphins or sign with the Rams.
Late Thursday night his wife Jackie gave up an update on Twitter:
“I know you guys want answers right now, we do too! It’s all going to work out for the best and we’ll let you know when we know!”
She added: “Believe me, if I had an answer you guys would know.”
Locally, the Dolphins will also spend Friday wooing Brandon Gibson, a free agent receiver last with St. Louis who arrived in town Thursday. There’s a sense of optimism he won’t leave Miami without a deal. Linebacker Thomas Howard and offensive lineman Lance Louis, both visitors at Dolphins camp Thursday, deserve attention too.
Elsewhere, Dolphins corner R.J. Stanford signed his exclusive rights tender contract Friday, his agent announced on Twitter.
