On Wednesday, he got the best of Mark Sanchez, who had his worst practice of training camp. Sanchez, working with the first team, finished 3-of-10 with a touchdown and an interception. Geno Smith had another strong practice as he begins to look like hes passing Sanchez in the competition. He went 5-of-6 with two sacks.
Smith has proven to be a quick study. At one point Ryan lined up eight defensive players on the line of scrimmage against Smith. An offensive lineman jumped offsides. Ryan showed another blitz look on the next play. This time, Smith used a hard count to get a defender to jump, showing good awareness.
Antonio Cromartie had the interception on Sanchez, making a nice play on the ball and tipping it to himself. Sanchez also had an interception in individual drills, this one by Isaiah Trufant on a tumbling catch.
Smith was not perfect. He still is holding onto the ball too long and has to learn when to just get rid of the ball. One throw was into double coverage deep down the field when he probably should have just throw it out of bounds.
DE Muhammad Wilkerson continues to be extremely active. He knocked down a Sanchez pass, almost intercepting it RB Chris Ivory did not participate in team drills. Rookie CB Dee Milliner spent a lot of practice listening to Cromartie. DL Sheldon Richardson did not practice because of dental issues. Ryan said he believes Richardson needs a root canal. WR Titus Ryan, who has had some good moments in camp, was injured during individual drills. It appeared to be his hamstring. WR Ryan Spadola had a bad drop during individual drills on a nice pass from Smith. Roookie Brian Winters worked at left guard with the first team. Ryan said Stephen Peterman is nursing a shoulder injury. OLB Ricky Sapp continues to have nice moments in practice. He blew up a running play Wednesday, stopping John Griffin seven yards behind the line of scrimmage. Entertaining argument between WR Ben Obomanu and S Bret Lockett, who got tangled up. They continued to jaw when they got up with Obomanu saying you have not made a play all training camp. Ouch. The offensive and defensive lines got into a brawl during drills with Willie Colon in the middle of it. K Nick Folk was 3-for-3 on field goals with a long of 50 yards. Billy Cundiff was 2-for-3, missing a 50-yarder.
