The New York Jets didn't envision Bilal Powell would open the regular season as their starting running back. And yet here we are.

Powell currently sits atop the depth chart found on the Jets' official website. Chris Ivory and newly acquired Alex Green are listed as backups as the team prepares for its Week 1 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ivory was the presumptive starter before training camp, but a lingering hamstring injury and unimpressive preseason (14 carries for 28 yards) kept him from seizing control of the job. Powell sandwiched two dreary performances against the Detroit Lions and New York Giants with a strong outing (seven carries for 68 yards) against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The missing piece right now is Mike Goodson, who begins his four-game suspension Sunday. Powell could find himself phased out of the rotation if he's unable to make an impact before Week 5.

Ivory will see work Sunday, regardless of his current place in the pecking order. He remains the favorite to be the Jets' leading rusher by season's end.

This kind of sucks. I know there have been questions to whether Ivory was actually a good rb but I really dont think Powell is a legit #1 rb. Hopefully he proves me wrong. If Powell isnt the guy and Ivory continues to get injured or just plain sucks then it will be a major issue for us because Geno will get major pressure.

It's very possible Powell is the best back on the team ivory could assume the role he had in new Orleans .

I was thinking the same thing. If Powell can get a decent yard per carry average early in games then we can use ivory late in games for the big play. Kind of like how we used Thomas jones and a young shonn green.

Don't get me wrong guys. I'm a big Powell fan. Ive rooted him on ever since he came to the team and saw flashes of greatness in him here and there. Certain players on the roster I cant stand but Powell isn't one of them. I'm just thinking about the fact that he was fighting with Mcknight for playing time. My hope is he turns out to be the next Foster (Texans) who was a practice squad player for a few years as we all know and morphed into one of the leagues best super stars.

irrelevant. The hot man should get the carries. Powell had a strong camp and preseason, but they will mix them both in. Ivory has more talent, hopefully he can make plays for us.
